Job Description

MISSION: The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW: The SAS Programmer position reports to the PEIMS Reporting Unit manager in the Research and Analysis Division. This position is responsible for developing a wide range of programs to produce high-quality reports and data files that disseminate information about students, district employees, and educational organizations using statewide data. The data displayed in these reports play a critical role in informing stakeholders about the performance of the Texas public school system, both in terms of student learning outcomes and district operations.

In an effort to provide useful information for the advancement of Texas education, this position works closely with a team of education data specialists to develop programs to produce reports, perform quality assurance tasks, and identify ways to improve
the quality and efficiency of the report production processes.

The position works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Use SAS programming to develop reports and data files requested by internal and external stakeholders, including public information requests, and document all projects
  • Ensure all data requests comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Create and update education web reports and maintain HTML pages.
  • Collaborate with other TEA programmers on programming techniques and state education data characteristics
  • Perform quality assurance tasks on colleagues’ reports
  • Serve as a technical resource to management, school districts, the general public, and colleagues

 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.


Experience: At least three (3) years of experience with SAS or SQL programming.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience developing and maintaining web reports.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work in a dynamic environment
  • Expertise in systematically analyzing programs and data systems in-depth and proposing/implementing appropriate solutions
  • Knowledge base to develop expertise in the state’s educational data systems, including PEIMS and STAAR
  • Capacity to engage in a collaborative, results-oriented team environment
  • Strong project management skills
  • Highly organized; ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines
  • A desire to self-reflect, give/receive feedback and continuously improve
  • Ability to break down complex information into comprehensive parts, ask questions, synthesize and analyze
