Meridian is a PreK-8th grade school located in the Washington DC’s vibrant U Street Corridor. Our mission is to inspire a passion for learning in our students and to help them build their self-confidence and self-respect through academic achievement. 

Our 650+ students are a diverse mix of African-American, Latino, Asian, African, and White students. Almost 30% of our students are English language learners, and we have one of the largest Hispanic populations in DC charter schools. The Director of Student Support Services is a full-time, year-round position. The Director is a member of the school leadership team and supervises a team of special education and ELL coordinators, teachers, and related service providers. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Promote school-wide responsibility and high expectations for the success of all students, including those with disabilities 
  • Lead and manage the special education and ELL service delivery system including supervising special education and ELL managers, and managing external service providers
  • Manage and use data to continually improve student outcomes 
  • Identify and implement high-impact instructional programs and resources to support the learning of students with disabilities
  • Partner with principals and other instructional leaders to ensure effective collaboration between general teachers and special education and ELL teachers during the process of planning, teaching, and assessment
  • Oversee the development of assessment administration plans that effectively meet the needs of students with disabilities 
  • Develop high-performing special education and ELL staff; recruit and hire staff when necessary
  • Provide research-based, effective professional development on educating students with disabilities for all staff 
  • Oversee Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes in the absence of the special education manager
  • Ensure effective implementation of the Child Find process
  • Oversee the Student Support Team (SST) process
  • Oversee school compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and all other laws, regulations, and mandates applicable to students with disabilities Connect with special education team to ensure all team members, including parents, are prepared for IEP meetings
  • Oversee implementation of recommendations from documents such as Quality Assurance Review (QAR) 
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the Public Charter School Board (PCSB) and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), as appropriate 

Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications: 

  • Special Education Standard Certification in Washington, D.C., Masters degree in Special Education, Administration, or related field preferred 
  • Seasoned special education leader, with three to five years of experience working in an urban education system 
  • Extensive knowledge of techniques that contribute to a successful inclusion setting
  • Familiarity with Common Core Standards and the PARCC assessment
  • Familiarity with PowerSchool and SEDS
  • Strong management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop a diverse group of educators 
  • Skilled at analyzing, interpreting, and using data to collaborate, identify best practices and areas for improvement, and drive results 
  • Capability to effectively build, develop and maintain strong relationships with staff, teachers, parents, students, and community stakeholders 
  • Ability to self-direct, prioritize among competing goals, and drive results in a fast paced environment 
  • Adept at thinking strategically, translating plans into action, and exhibiting excellent judgment 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as presentation skills, with keen attention to detail
