Role Mission: The Director of IDEA's Principal Successor Program is responsible for designing and implementing a Principal Successor Program for future IDEA principals who have been identified as assuming the principalship at existing IDEA campuses. The goal of the Principal Successor Program is that all successor principals transition into the principalship role while improving academic, operational and human capital outcomes at their campus. The Director of IDEA's Principal Succession Program is charged with designing a program uniquely suited to the needs of IDEA leaders who will lead existing schools. This work will include creating a scope and sequence for leader development, facilitating professional development sessions, and creating school deliverables. The Director of the Principal Successor Program partners closely with the Vice President of School Leader Support, Vice Presidents of Schools, the Director of Rhodes, and other key members of the Human Assets team to design and execute the Principal Successor Program. The Director of the Principal Successor Program reports to the Vice President of School Leader Support and is an integral member of IDEA's national principal preparation team.


IDEA Public Schools earns an "A" rating
  • Design and implement Successor program so that all launching schools are "A" rated campuses
  • Partner with VP of School Leader Support to ensure programmatic efforts align to IDEA's organizational goals
  • Solicit feedback from relevant stakeholders on program scope and sequence and implementation
  • Use data to inform Principal Successor Program scope and sequence and monitor progress toward goals, provide feedback and coaching, and adjust tactics accordingly

90% of all schools in the programmatic efforts achieve their benchmarks toward the 90% student persistence goal by the end of the first month of school.
  • Provide guidance, training, and support for founding, successor, and turnaround principals to successfully onboard and support their new students and families including Welcome to Idea and all Beginning of Year operations and school culture routines and procedures that lead to high investment and retention of students and families
  • Monitor progress toward goals, provide feedback and coaching, and adjust tactics accordingly

100% principal retention of successor principals
  • Partner with VP of School Leader Support and VPs of Schools to ensure smooth transition from Principal Successor Program to principal
  • Ensure 100% of principals in programmatic efforts meet principal-ready definition

100% of successor campuses meet their benchmarks toward the 85% teacher retention goal by the end of the first month of school
  • Provide guidance and support for successor principals to create campus vision, build relationships with existing staff members, and identify key influencers on campus
  • Monitor progress toward goals, provide feedback and coaching, and adjust tactics accordingly

100% of successor principals complete all high-quality programmatic deliverables
  • Provide guidance, training, and support for successors so they meet goals before leadership transition
  • Partner closely with Directors of Leader Development to ensure program participants meet principal-ready definition
  • Work with Vice President of School Leader Support to ensure successor principals are exemplary people managers and able to lead others to results across all functional areas

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Coaching and developing Rhodes fellows, no direct management responsibilities

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required; master's degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Experience: Teaching and principal experience required

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong project management skills including establishing outcomes, determining evaluative measures, tracking progress, and course correcting when necessary
  • Exceptional design & facilitation of adult professional development programs & sessions as well as the ability to coach and develop others on their design and facilitation
  • Ability to evaluate deliverables for strengths and areas of risk to provide high-quality feedback both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to coach and influence school leaders across the organization

Additional Expectations
  • Up to 30% travel required at certain points of the year

  • Salaries for people entering this role typically fall between $78,000 and $94,404 commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications. This role is also eligible for a performance bonus based on individual and organizational performance and goal attainment.
