Research Experiences for Veterans (VRS)

NSF’s supplemental funding through SBIR/STTR supports active participation in science, engineering, and education research by students, teachers, community college faculty, veterans and undergraduates in an entrepreneurial setting. These supplement programs seek to expand veterans’ participation in all kinds of research—both disciplinary and interdisciplinary. They draw on the integration of research and education to attract a diverse talent pool into careers in science and engineering. (; email: [email protected]). 

During the Winter semester of 2020, Chef Koochooloo, an active NSF SBIR/STTR Phase II grantee, is looking for a veteran to participate in the VRS program.  All research will be done at the Mountain View, California facility.

We are looking for US veterans who wish to explore a career in research, meeting the following criteria:

  • Knows how to handle required recording equipment 
  • Have experience with recording video material and editing this material
  • Know  animating and effects
  • Have experience with editing sound 
  • Excellent eye for detail
  • Good communication and organization skills
  • Able to work independently and proactively, and to meet deadlines

The selected undergraduate will conduct the following research activities

    • Recruit and research teachers, students and principals to interview 
    • Conduct research in the best way to teach students STEAM through cooking with the help of video material.
    • Record 30 videos of culinary techniques for the Chef Koochooloo application. These will be 30 seconds to 1 minute each
    • Conduct research on the behavior of students when they are interacting with video material and/or animations
    • Conduct research on how to effectively film students for different end goals. Such as explanation of culinary techniques, explanation of science and other standards and collaboration activities during classes.
    • Guide kids in preparing recipes from different countries and discovering the world in a classroom setting and observing their behavior and filling out survey results


Here is an example of a video we created for a recipe. The video’s we require will be similar to this one but shorter.
