Job Description

The Role 

The Executive Director is responsible for leading Baltimore Montessori in its next phase of growth. The primary focus of this role is to provide leadership for emerging opportunities and strategic initiatives that further the mission of the school while ensuring the health, equitable practices, and sustainability of the organization. The Executive Director serves as the chief spokesperson for the organization and ensures proper dialogue and representation among internal and external stakeholders.  

Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is the senior administrator and visionary leader of Baltimore Montessori Inc., charged with upholding the vision and mission of the school, ensuring accountability for the charter contract and strategic goals, supporting governance, community relations and charter advocacy, and overseeing non-profit management. The Executive Director is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors and serves on all Board committees. The anticipated start date for this position is June 1, 2022.

Our Story 

Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School (BMPCS) is located in the heart of Baltimore City’s historic Greenmount West community. Propelled by the belief that all children deserve access to a high-quality Montessori education regardless of income status, and inspired by the growing number of public Montessori schools around the country, Baltimore Montessori was founded in 2008. Today, we serve a diverse and vibrant community of 560 students in PreK(3’s) through 8th grade. Our school features a Seed to Table program, a beautiful outdoor environment, a rehabilitated historic building, a talented and dedicated staff, a supportive and visionary administration, and a dynamic and engaged parent community. As part of a school-wide commitment to lifelong learning, we cultivate strategic partnerships to bolster our capacity and promote the exchange of best practices. With a waiting list of over 800 students, Baltimore Montessori Public is Baltimore City’s only public Montessori school.

BMPCS is managed and directed by the non-profit organization, Baltimore Montessori Inc. (BMI), which holds and is responsible for the school’s charter contract. BMI and BMPCS are committed to providing an equitable and inclusive environment that supports the well-being of all students, families, and staff in our community. 

Primary Responsibilities

Organizational Stewardship 

  • Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors to strengthen and implement BMPCS’s mission with an emphasis on strategic planning initiatives, growth and organizational excellence
    • Ensure ongoing communication and development with the Board
    • Manage a successful charter renewal process 
  • In conjunction with the Board of Directors and organizational leadership, ensure the successful implementation of the organization’s new strategic plan through the development and execution of key initiatives and corresponding time bound milestones
  • Lead initiatives to secure resources necessary for the successful implementation of strategic initiatives, including capital projects, and ensure long-term sustainability
  • In collaboration with the school principal, Culture of Excellence board committee, and designated consultants, determine, implement, and evaluate academic, equity, and school culture goals and programs to strengthen outcomes and promote a sense of belonging and well being 
  • Cultivate an active presence within the charter and Montessori communities to create meaningful relationships and thought partnerships 
  • Implement and monitor priorities from the strategic plan to enhance programming, expand the impact of BMPCS, build a model public Montessori program, and equip our students with the tools to be successful, self-sufficient, and fulfilled

External Engagement

  • Forge our identity in the field of urban public schools, the Baltimore community, and model public Montessori programs as well as unique initiatives like our Seed to Table Program
  • Represent the school to external stakeholders to enhance the school’s mission and public profile, including identifying new partners and deepening relationships with existing partners
  • Stay informed of and engaged in advocacy opportunities to advance issues related to charter schools at the local, state, and national level, including legislative actions, commensurate funding, and preserving autonomy in decision-making

People & Team Development 

  • Supervise the Principal and Foundation Director, including coaching, support and performance management and ensure compliance with local/state requirements and state/federal laws
  • Set vision and direction for staff culture, including the recruitment and retention of high quality talent 
  • Implement strong oversight and accountability metrics to facilitate adherence to school and state academic standards

Primary Qualifications 

  • Master's degree in non-profit or educational leadership required 
  • Understanding of and commitment to social justice and leading an inclusive organization 
  • Prior exposure to and experience in charter or urban public schools required
    • Familiarity with charter compliance and renewal processes preferred
    • Knowledge of Montessori pedagogy preferred 
  • 3 - 5 years executive non-profit leadership, including but not limited to:
    • Development, donor relations and fundraising 
    • Implementation of strategic initiatives 
    • Budget management over 3 million dollars 

Compensation: The full-time salary range for the Executive Director begins at $140,000 with a robust benefits package and relocation.
