Child Nutrition Assistant


Department: Child Nutrition Job Status: Part-Time or Full Time

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt Reports To: Cafeteria Manager

Grade/Level: Pre-K-12 Amount of Travel Required: None

Work Schedule: 3-8 hours Positions Supervised: None


Prepare, cook, and perform other food preparation and cafeteria related duties in a school cafeteria.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

  • Assist in resolving customer complaints regarding food service.
  • Responsible for following all USDA regulations.
  • Maintain all standards of sanitation for personnel in food preparation, maintenance of the kitchen, and operation of physical plant as outlined in Section V of the Arkansas Child Nutrition Program.
  • Follow the manager's instructions in preparing and serving food, in accordance with the Procedures Manual, Recipe Directions, and daily menus as it relates to food/serving portions.
  • Wash pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and other cooking equipment
  • Follow all standards of safety in preparing, storing, and serving food.
  • Follow the manager's instruction in portioning, garnishing, and serving meals.
  • Be punctual (on time) and maintain a high level of individual employee attendance (100% individual attendance is the goal with 95% being acceptable).
  • Participate in implementing promotions of special school activities.
  • Follows all policies and procedures in this handbook, the procedures manual, recipes, recipe directions manuals, and personnel handbook.
  • Attends in-service training classes and workshops
  • Maintain required forms and records as assigned by the manager.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with the school community
  • Recognize the chain of command, grievance procedures, and levels of job responsibilities.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Child Nutrition Manager, Director, and Nutrition Coordinator.
  • Recommend measures for improving work procedures and worker performance to increase service quality and enhance job safety.
  • Assist in the requisition supplies and equipment needed to ensure quality and timely delivery of services.
  • Recognize the chain of command, grievance procedures, and levels of job responsibilities.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Director and Nutrition Coordinator.

Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.

Experience: Prior child nutrition experience preferred.

Computer Skills: Must be able to operate a computer/cash register.

Certificates & Licenses: Must be able to in-service classes when necessary.

Other Requirements: Full-time employees must obtain 10 hours annually of Child Nutrition training and successfully pass FBI/DHS background checks.

Work is performed in a school kitchen environment where temperatures from hot ovens, steamers, and dishwashers can cause discomfort. Noise from students and kitchen equipment can be excessive. Injuries from kitchen equipment are possible; safety rules, training, and protective equipment are required.
