Job Description


DEFINITION OF POSITION : Interpret/translate and voice (if necessary) for deaf/hard of hearing/deaf plus students during classroom presentations, lectures, discussions and other communications for a wide variety of academic subjects and student grade levels. Adapt signing level to communication needs of the student. Tutor Deaf and Hard of Hearing student in selected subject areas as directed by the classroom teacher and perform classroom support functions as requested by the classroom teacher provided the communication needs of the student are met.

SUPERVISOR: Director of Special Services/Assistant Director of Special Services

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Fluency in English and American Sign Language (ASL) or exact English
  • Knowledge of the RID Code of Professional Conduct
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Deaf culture
  • Current first aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain certification upon hire
  • Graduation from a recognized interpreter training program (ITP)
  • Successful completion of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a minimum score of 3.5 AND a passing score on the EIPA written test or National Interpreting Certification with Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) AND a passing score on the EIPA written test
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with students, families and staff
  • Knowledge of school operations and student safety rules and procedures
  • Knowledge of FERPA laws and procedures
SPECIFIC JOB RELATED ACTIVITIES:
  • Provide interpreting/transliterating for students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, classmates and educational staff
  • Participate in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress on the Individual Education Plan (IEP), providing insight on the success of communication strategies
  • Provide interpreting/transliterating for extra-curricular activities and parent meetings when necessary
  • Provide interpreting/transliterating for other needs that may arise
  • Prepare for classroom interpreting/transliterating (familiarization with vocabulary and concepts)
  • Interpret/transliterate all grade levels, P-12, and in a variety of settings such as, but not limited to: social and academic settings, direct and incidental conversations, class instructions, lectures, tests, assemblies, field trips, etc.
  • Confer with the classroom teacher regarding academic subjects
  • Maintain confidentiality while respecting the need for cooperation among professional school staff for the benefit of the student
  • Perform basic computer skills such as word processing and e-mail
  • Report to assigned duty areas promptly and reliably
  • Remain flexible to changes in assignments and situations
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Regularly demonstrate professionalism in appearance, actions, decisions, and overall performance
  • Ability to consistently:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor and/or classroom teacher
PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

A person working in this position will exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally while carrying, pushing, and/or pulling to move objects. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unaided and may lift over 50 pounds with the assistance of another person and/or a lift assist. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit; some stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching may occur; and significant fine finger dexterity is needed. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or ordinary infectious diseases carried by students.

TERMS OF CONTRACT:
  • Salary: Unrepresented Classified Employee Wage Schedule, Educational Interpreter, $22.00 per hour
  • Length of Contract: 6.0 hours/day for the 2020-2021 school year only
  • Leaves/Benefits: As per district policy
