Job Description


In the absence of the classroom teacher, the substitute teacher enables each student to pursue his or her education as smoothly and completely as possible by providing instruction, encouraging student progress and managing the learning environment.

Reports To: Building Principals, the Assistant Director of Human Resources, and the Coordinator of Human Resources

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $120 (daily rate)-$145 (long-term rate) per day

Qualifications and Requirements
A minimum requirement of 60 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited college or universityA valid Kansas Teaching License, Kansas Standard Substitute Teaching License, or Kansas Emergency Substitute LicenseExperience working with school age children preferredA negative Tuberculosis (TB) test dated within the past 18 monthsComplete a criminal background check

Essential Job Functions
Use of the district substitute placement system (currently Frontline/AESOP)Reports to the school office upon arrival and performs all check-in procedures as requiredMaintains the established routines and procedures of the assigned school and classroom as fully as possibleLeads and facilitates lessons plans and activities for students as directed by the absent teacherConsults with a building administrator, department head, team leader, grade level teachers, etc. before initiating any teaching or other procedure not specifiedFollows all district and school policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictatesMaintains a clean and organized classroom environmentSupporting and assisting fellow staff and administration as neededDevelops and maintains positive student, teacher, staff, and parent relationshipsEncourages, models, and assumes responsibility for positive and appropriate classroom behaviorMaintains a safe and welcoming classroom environmentMaintains a positive attitude even in times of crisis or stressOther duties/responsibilities deemed necessary may be assigned

Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of timeAbility to enter data into a computer, to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aidsAbility to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephoneAbility to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephoneAbility to travel within the districtPhysical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to heightAbility to bend, stoop, sit on floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overheadRegular attendance and physical presence at the job
