Job Description

ANNOUNCEMENT: The Cabarrus County School System is accepting applications for a ten-month Cafeteria ENTRY LEVEL ASSISTANT (5 Month Temporary/Probationary period) or Assistant II (Current SNP employee).
This vacancy is at West Cabarrus High School.


General Definition of Work
Performs human support work preparing and serving institutional meals and cleaning cafeterias, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Qualification Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED desired.
  • General Kitchen experience.
  • Obtain Serve Safe certification within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to adjust to new and changing situations.
  • Ability to get along well with others.
  • Ability to assist in creating an inviting atmosphere for customers and staff.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work quickly with hands and complete assignment in time allotted.
Pay Grade 51

Reports to
Cafeteria Manager

Essential Functions
  • Acts as a cashier.
  • Washes and wraps fresh fruit; measures and cups canned fruit
  • Washes and measures ingredients for healthy cart salads.
  • Prepares specialty fruit and assists in vegetable preparation.
  • Prepares food for next day, cleans and sanitizes work area.
  • Counts money for petty cash; opens register; reconciles register at the end of the day.
  • Cleans kitchen equipment including dish room.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of materials and methods used in preparing and serving meats, breads, vegetables and other foods on a large scale.
  • General knowledge of the use or care of food preparation equipment.
  • General knowledge of food values and nutrition.
  • General knowledge of U.S.D.A. rules and regulations.
  • Skill in the use of standardized recipes and specialized kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Ability to get along well with others.
  • Ability to work long hours while standing and under high temperature conditions.

Physical Requirements
  • Requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
  • Frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions.
  • Work has standard vision requirements.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by using the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  • Requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts.
  • Requires use of measuring devices.
  • Occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts.
  • May be exposed to the risk of electrical shock and to blood borne pathogens.
  • May be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to work in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

  • At the end of the probationary position, an offer of continued employment may be extended contingent on the availability of a position and satisfactory performance in the probationary position.
