OPPORTUNITY

The National Math and Science Initiative is seeking a Vice President of Technology. At NMSI, people mean everything; they are the lifeblood of the organization. Without NMSI staff, NMSI is just an idea; technology is critical to NMSI achieving its mission of serving all students, especially those furthest from opportunity. The Vice President of Technology will provide the vision and leadership to support NMSI’s programs and services. The VP of Technology will guide the organization's development, implementation, management, and support of all technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Vice President of Technology Include But Are Not Limited To:

Senior leadership and strategic vision setting:

  • Serve as a member of the leadership team with the responsibility to support and advise leadership in all matters related to the technology needs of the organization;
  • A leader capable of establishing a technology vision aligned to NMSI’s long-term goals and mission;
  • Understand the technical needs of the organization, including security/compliance requirements, system infrastructure, disaster recovery, software development cycles, and system interoperability;
  • Make build-vs-buy decisions. Research market solutions that can be bought and integrated into NMSI products or drive any custom development using in-house staff or contractors;
  • Be a critical partner to our academic teams in developing strategies and systems to serve more students, teachers, and other stakeholders (e.g., developing an online delivery strategy for our core programs or deploying a learning management system);
  • Identify and maximize opportunities for technology efficacy, scalability, and innovation.

Technical expertise and technology oversight:

  • A senior-level technology leader experienced with oversight of technological infrastructure (networks and computer systems) in the organization to ensure optimal performance and cost-effectiveness;
  • Oversee the hiring, development, and retention of a well-skilled technology workforce; ensure training and development are provided consistently to maintain and enhance skill levels in all technology disciplines;
  • An entrepreneurial spirit who leads and inspires teams to achieve their best work while solving complicated problems in a supportive culture;
  • Oversee the technological infrastructure (networks and computer systems) in the organization to ensure optimal performance and cost-effectiveness;
  • Creates an organizational culture that consistently focuses on improving individual, team, and organization-wide performance;
  • Proactively identifies and acknowledges mistakes made (individually and throughout the organization) and reflects meaningfully on causes, using them as a learning experience for self and the organization;
  • A leader who understands how to secure an organization’s systems and data. You understand security compliance, disaster recovery, and business continuity practices.

Relationship manager and effective communicator:

  • Partner with leaders across functions to strategize and deliver technology initiatives aligned with business initiatives;
  • Primary liaison with leadership and internal teams to provide regular technology updates, represent technology perspective and advocate for the Technology Team;
  • A leader who works effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, job type—or any other factor that makes them unique!

Requirements

The highly successful candidate has excellent attention to detail who, can execute and learn quickly, has a practice of reflecting on and analyzing themself and systems for anti-racist behaviors and practices, a systems orientation, and a deep belief in the ability of people to grow and the skills to move people to change.

Additionally, the ideal Vice President of Technology candidate will have:

  • Ability to embrace technology as a tool to enhance your work effectiveness but not a means to replace hard work;
  • 10+ years’ Information Technology experience with increasing levels of responsibility and a track record of success;
  • A knack for building relationships quickly and inspiring those around you;
  • A healthy blend of strategic, team, operational, and equity leadership;
  • A drive to achieve great results on behalf of students, especially those furthest from opportunity;
  • A successful track record leading effective teams and individuals, managing organizational change, and initiating key innovations;
  • An ability to connect with a diverse group of people and build strong relationships grounded in listening and high levels of support and challenge;
  • Experience and comfort with giving and receiving both positive and constructive feedback and track record of taking action and adapting processes based on the input;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex technology updates to a variety of audiences (e.g., whole org, senior leadership team meetings, public board meetings, memos);
  • A strong analytic, performance management, accountability, and systems-thinking orientation necessary to inform strategy development and execution;
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to prepare, review and analyze data.

Benefits

The starting salary range for this position is $167,322 - $207,774, commensurate with related experience. At NMSI, we take pay equity seriously and work hard to ensure our team members are paid fairly regardless of their gender, race, or other demographic backgrounds.

In addition to a competitive salary with the potential for an annual pay increase, we offer a comprehensive total rewards package, including paying roughly 85% of employee-only medical, dental, and vision benefits plus a large portion for dependents. Staff are eligible to participate in 401(k) after 90 days of employment, with up to a 6% employee match, fully vested on day one of participation in the plan.

Other benefits for full-time employees include referral and performance-based annual bonuses, telecommunications stipends for eligible remote employees, 14-16 paid holidays annually (including a week-long winter break), and a generous PTO policy starting at 18 days per year.
