Position Overview

Instructional Leads in the Acero Schools Network serve as key members of the Student Achievement Team. They will work towards the improvement of academic programs by identifying and developing high quality resources. Specialists will build capacity in schools through professional development, coaching and facilitation of PLC's. Specialists will partner with high performing schools to plan, implement and evaluate pilot programs towards new and innovative practices. Their analysis of network wide data, resources and guidelines will inform program design and resource allocation relative to the specialist's area of focus. As a member of the Student Achievement Team, Instructional Leads are tasked with collaborative planning with leadership towards superior academic performance for all schools. The Humanities Instructional Lead will ensure that Acero Schools provides cutting-edge integration of ELA and Social Science instruction, leading to student mastery.

Core Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Identify cross-cutting instructional strategies that support student learning in language arts and social science contexts, and aligned curricular resources
  • Develop PD and related resources to strengthen implementation of strong practices
  • Collaborate with network and school leaders to customize and contextualize solutions
  • Engage teachers on a group and individual basis to build connection and capacity
  • Gather qualitative data on teacher and student experiences relating to above strategies to highlight successes and continually improve practices


  • Identify potential levers for improvement in the academic program, particularly relevant to high performing teachers and students
  • Vet partners and resources towards a well-informed program design
  • Collaborate with school leaders and teachers to develop plans for implementation, ongoing support and evaluation


  • Analyze multiple data sets (NWEA, PARCC, Interim Assessments) to identify areas for improvement in the network's academic program
  • Develop performance assessment program aligned to IL State Social Studies & Language Arts Standards
  • Review curriculum maps, instructional planning resources and guidelines to guide the development of the academic program towards more purposeful alignment and build cross-curricular connections


  • Strong content knowledge in literacy, social studies, arts and humanities
  • Extensive knowledge of language arts and social studies standards and curriculum
  • Deep knowledge of inquiry driven instruction
  • Deep knowledge of writing-focused constructivist pedagogy
  • Facility in guiding culturally relevant teaching practice
  • Facility with cross-curricular strategies and instructional planning
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, school personnel, and parents; and an ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Facility designing and implementing professional development with adult learners resulting in improved student outcomes
  • Skill in program design, implementation, data analysis and evaluation


  • Bachelor's Degree (required)
  • Master's Degree in Lit. Ed., Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Curriculum & Instruction or related field, as well as IL Literacy Endorsement (strongly preferred).


  • Three to five years of teaching experience in Language Arts, Social Studies or Humanities (required)
  • One to two years of Instructional coaching or administration experience (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience in design, preparation and presentation of professional development (preferred)


  • Must hold permanent residency in the United States (required)

Physical Demands

Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Physically demands require the ability to stand, bend, reach high and low, stoop, and walk around the classroom 60% of the day. In addition, walking up and down stairs several times a day. Must be able to lift 15 to 20 pounds for short periods of time and push and pull 15 to 20 lbs.

Working Conditions

Majority of work performed in a general office environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization-sponsored events and meetings.
