VOICE Charter School (www.voicecharterschool.org) is an elementary and middle school located in Long Island City, Queens that serves students in grades K-8. We are located just minutes from Manhattan (two stops from the last subway stop in Manhattan on the F train) and Long Island City's growing waterfront district, thriving arts community, and rapid residential growth. We combine rigorous academics with daily instruction in choral singing, thereby encouraging creative and critical thinking while improving academic performance. We support and develop the effectiveness of our teachers. We believe that teachers need time to collaborate to build their practice, so we provide them with over two hours of planning time a day, as well as additional days for curriculum development and training during the school year.

Asmusic and art both help to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills and open children's imaginations, all VOICE students participate in daily activities in the arts, including rigorous choral training. We design our arts-integrated curriculum to bring joy to the lives of our children in order to provide them with the skills necessary to forge their own path.

Position Responsibilities:

Counseling Mandated Counseling: Work with the Intervention Team to ensure counseling specifications on student IEPs are met; research the best practices and techniques on a case-by-case basis; conduct individual counseling and group counseling sessions; communicate with family, teachers, Intervention Team and assistants about interventionsNon-Mandated Counseling: Make recommendations and receive referrals on students who may benefit from counseling; initiate creation and administration of counseling groups as neededParent Relationships: Communicate closely with parents about child referrals, goals and progress; respond to parent outreach and provide at-home intervention strategies; conduct at-home visits as neededTeacher Relationships: Initiate and maintain relationships with teachers and assistants; communicate closely with them on student progress and brainstorm strategies; advocate for early intervention with students; follow up with all cases and students to ensure plans are put into place

Restoration Coordination and Preventative Work Follow the proper protocol and systems for transporting and monitoring children in Restoration Room; follow up on child's reintegration into classroom and thoroughly document each scenarioAttend meetings about student behavior as necessaryTeach Middle School Sex Ed
  • Crisis Work
Respond to unexpected crises that arise, such as bullying cases, sexual harassment, expressed intent to harm self or others, or extreme emotional reactions to life events; aid in investigation of events and administer group or individual counseling as neededProvide consultation to other adults regarding intervention in unexpected situationsConduct ACS Training for staff

Position Qualifications:

Educational Background and Work Experience

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Masters in Social Work (MSW) or Guidance Counselling (MSW preferred)

Preferred:
  • Experience with and interest in working with high needs students
  • NYS recognized LMSW (Licensed Masters in Social Work)
  • Coursework in Child and Family Therapy
  • Oral Spanish interpretation skills desirable but not required

Compensation and Benefits: Compensation is competitive and based on experience. VOICE's starting salary for teachers is above the district average, and we offer a comprehensive benefits package. VOICE is also a participant in the New York State Teachers Retirement System.
