Salary: $95,000 -$103,000 - Depending on experience and qualifications

Job Goal:

The CAO of Wayside Schools will have the unique opportunity to effect multigenerational change by being the instrumental driver of the Wayside Vision to change the lives and trajectories of families that have been educationally underserved for generations in Southeast Austin. ABOUT WAYSIDE SCHOOLS: Wayside Schools is an open-enrollment, tuition-free Pre-K3-12th grade public charter school network that provides over 2,100 scholars across its five South Austin schools with a rigorous International Baccalaureate education.  Since 2012, Wayside schools has empowered historically underserved scholars, providing them with the instructional experiences, academics skills, intellectual habits, and social and emotional competencies needed to become graduates from four-year colleges and universities, providing them with the access and opportunities they need to narrate their own futures and positively impact and empower the families and communities to which they belong.



  • Bachelor's Degree (required)
  • Master's Degree in an Education related field (required)
  • Bilingual (preferred)

  • Deep and proven commitment to improving the lives of scholars from low-income and underserved communities
  • A minimum of 3 years managing principals highly preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years as a high performing principal
  • A proven track record of success managing school leaders to achieve ambitious goals
  • Knowledge and experience with International Baccalaureate, Relay Graduate School instructional leadership practices programming a plus
  • Outstanding leadership and management skills, capacity to build and manage a team, ability to work through others, and effective conflict management techniques
  • Demonstrate entrepreneurial success in building a program, department, or organization
  • Outstanding written, speaking, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate strengths in strategic planning, project planning, and progress monitoring
  • Demonstrate passion for the mission, vision, and values of Wayside Schools

Performance Responsibilities:

 Reporting to the Superintendent, the Chief Academic Officer is responsible for ensuring all stakeholders are best positioned to meet their annual academic outcomes throughout the organization, including curriculum and assessment, principal management and coaching, and professional development. The CAO will inspire a world-class vision for academic excellence, while tracking, evaluating, and supporting continuous improvement throughout the pipeline that ultimately prepares 100% of our students to thrive and complete degrees at competitive four-year universities.

  • Manage  and develop the Head of Schools (principal manager) responsible for driving outstanding student achievement in our schools
  • Manage a team of curriculum and instructional leadership specialists
  • Report, analyze, and develop action plans for key data metrics in order to meet annual goals and report to the School Board with the support of the Superintendent
  • Ensure and develop a cohesive, action-oriented system of formative and summative assessments is in place
  • Adopt and oversee implementation of a rigorous college prep academic program, including annual preK-12 pacing plans, in all disciplines
  • Execute most effective research-based inclusion learning materials for English language learners and students with special needs
  • Design and lead Professional Development for a network of 300 teachers
  • Develop and facilitate professional development for new hires, summer training, weekly staff meetings, and ad-hoc training needs, in collaboration with school principals
  • Support instructional coaching throughout the schools
  • Create and implement school culture campaign and supports to meet student needs while driving personal and academic excellence throughout all campuses
  • Ensure retention of high performing staff members, perform targeted work with staff not meeting expectations, and create transition plans for on-boarding or exiting staff members
  • Demonstrate a high level of resourcefulness, tenacity, and thoughtful decision-making when faced with challenges and ambiguity
  • Perform other duties as needed

The CAO will lead a high-performing team that will provide high impact academic capacity-building and support to meet Wayside Schools’ annual goals. The Chief Academic Officer will oversee:

Head of Schools (Principal Manager)

Sr. Directors of Academics (2)

Director of Special Education

Math Specialist

Literacy and Bilingual Specialists (2)

This position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The office hours are 7:30- a.m. to 4:30 p.m., however, the Principal from time to time may work an extended schedule, including weekends and evenings according to demands of the role and tasks.
