Job Description

MISSION: The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems.

This position is funded through September 30, 2022 under the federal CARES Act grant. Continuation of the position beyond that date is contingent on available funding.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The District Support Specialist will support the Director of Special Projects in System Support to help school districts implement new curriculum, instructional, and staffing models necessitated by school district response to the current COVID crisis. This includes supporting the development of on-campus and remote school models. This person will perform highly advanced (senior-level) consultative and technical assistance work to support the implementation of diagnostics and strategic plans intended to ensure Local Education Agencies (LEAs) are able to address immediate student learning needs and develop transformative systems for longer-term continuous improvement. This role will provide training, coordination, and support to external consultants and regional Education Service Centers (ESCs) to achieve the outcomes of this initiative. This role works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

  • Oversees, plans, develops, implements, and monitors standards and progress to support LEA COVID-19 Recovery efforts
  • Analyze and monitor projects to identify issues, risks, and opportunities for improvement and design strategies to improve coordination, communication, and mitigate or avoid future risks
  • Identify needs, develop tailored coaching and deliver targeted support plans for external contractors and regional ESCs; this includes providing continuous improvement of rigorous timelines, milestones, metric and data reporting tools
  • Proactively build and maintain strong relationships with people across an organization to gain their investment and foster effective cross-functional communication and collaboration





Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: At least four (4) years of experience in managing large, complex projects and developing and/or implementing project management systems.

Substitutions: Education and experience may substitute for one another on a year-for-year basis.


  • Certified Texas Contract Manager (CTCM) certification must be obtained within first six (6) months of employment 
  • Ability to lead by influence to achieve investment and results from staff not directly supervised by this position
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Ability to analyze complex information and develop plans to address identified issues
  • Analytical skills and problem-solving ability with meticulous attention to detail
  • Highly organized; ability to balance the demands of multiple projects at different stages of development while maintaining quality and consistency across all work
  • Ability to break down complex information into component parts, ask questions, synthesize and analyze
  • Exercise strong judgement in making decisions
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A desire to self-reflect, give/receive feedback and continuously improve
  • Broad knowledge of Texas education and school funding preferred
