Job Description

MISSION: The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Teacher Mentorship and Leadership Specialist will play a critical role in the planning and implementation of the Mentor Program Allotment, ultimately creating a positive impact on new teacher support across the state of Texas. This role will also support the design and rollout of teacher leadership programs, which serve to expand the impact highly effective teachers. The main work for this role will fall into four broad areas: overseeing the implementation of the Mentor Program Allotment, managing stakeholder engagement and external communications; contributing the development of teacher leadership programs, and supporting cross-agency work related to recruiting, supporting, and retaining effective teachers. This individual reports to the Director of Teacher Leadership.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversees, coordinates, and manages the stakeholder engagement, communications, and the rulemaking process for the Mentor Program Allotment.
  • Develops and publishes guidance, application and review materials, and general information regarding the Mentor Program Allotment and mentorship best practices.
  • Contributes to the process for evaluating district mentor programs and utilizes that process to evaluate the extent to which districts meet best practices; creates reports to communicate program effectiveness.
  • Supports the identification, design, and rollout of effective teacher leadership training programs.
  • Supports cross-agency work in teacher mentorship, leadership, compensation, support, and retention, and ensures alignment with other agency and ESC initiatives in these areas.

 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: At least three (3) years of experience in the field of education with at least one year as a teacher leader or mentor.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A demonstrated track record of success improving student outcomes as a teacher
  • An in-depth knowledge of mentorship best practices that lead to improved teaching and learning
  • Self-starter with ability to learn quickly and adjust based on external feedback and self-learning
  • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Communicates complex ideas clearly, using practical and accessible language
  • Ability to break down complex information into comprehensive parts, ask questions, synthesize and analyze
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders through small and large group facilitation
  • Collaborative and results-oriented, especially within a team environment
  • A desire to self-reflect, give/receive feedback, and continuously improve
  • Experience with balancing the demands of multiple projects at different stages of development while maintaining quality and consistency across all work with periodic job and task ambiguity
  • Strong long-term planning and project management skills, including establishing outcomes, determining evaluative measures, and tracking progress
