JOURNEY-LEVEL MECHANIC

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position could include but not be limited to the following duties:
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and engine defects in buses and other automotive equipment.
  • Overhaul and rebuild engines (diesel/gas), transmissions, differentials, brake systems, and other major components by repair and replacement of parts.
  • Repair and rebuild generators, alternators, and all other electrical components utilizing testing devices and machine equipment as required.
  • Perform general tune-ups, utilizing diagnostic equipment.
  • Make road-side repairs as required (and tow disabled vehicles to the maintenance shop).
  • Repair and replace seats, glass, sheet metal, latches, and other body components and assemblies.
  • Change oil and filters; install antifreeze and snow chains; repair tires; adjust brakes; lubricate chassis, wheel bearings, and other assemblies as required. Perform all required preventative maintenance and regular bus safety inspections.
  • Operate battery chargers, valve refacing and reseating machines, compression gauges, torque wrenches, welding (acetylene and arc) equipment, grinders, reamers, timing lights, hoists, jacks, presses, headlight adjustment machine, air wrenches, small lathe, spark plug tester for performing repair and maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Assist in cleaning and organization of the shop, parts room and other maintenance facilities. May provide custodial duties as assigned.
  • Complete vehicle maintenance forms and records (e.g., work orders, stock records, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as required.


WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Journey-level Mechanics are exposed to outside climatic conditions during winter and summer months. Workers would be exposed to some chemicals and cleaning solvents. Noise level is considered average to above average when working in mechanical areas. Average and above average for power tools and other maintenance equipment. The above conditions are not to a degree or length of time to cause marked discomfort or possible bodily injury to the worker.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • School bus driver authorization
  • First aid/CPR qualified
  • Basic computer experience
  • Ability to identify, diagnose, and repair vehicle malfunctions
  • Ability to communicate with staff, peers, and students
  • Ability to understand job functions in relationship to school district needs
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to maintain accurate bus repair and other records
  • Ability to get along well with co-workers
  • Must be in good physical condition; heavy lifting is required
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with little or no supervision


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Washington State driver's license; Class B, CDL with appropriate endorsements
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic; full journeyman status as an automotive mechanic; or a minimum of four years applicable work experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Experience in repair and maintenance of heavy duty and diesel vehicles and special vehicular equipment
  • Proof of citizenship (driver's license, birth certificate, social security card, passport, etc.)
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Ability to do required physical work
