POSITION: General Music Teacher Grades 6, 7, 8 and Vocal Music Director - Choir

To instruct children in the general music class in such a manner as to inspire, motivate and stimulate the child to learn general music concepts to the utmost of the child's musical ability and skill level.

To instruct children in the choir in such a manner as to inspire, motivate and stimulate the child to learn to sing to the utmost of the child's musical ability

  1. Professional Educator License with K-12 Music Endorsement /Certification or equivalent
  2. Bachelor's degree in Music Education or Applied Music
  3. High degree of proficiency on the piano or other appropriate instrument.
  4. Thoroughly familiar with appropriate music methods, literature and books which pertain to the junior high schools.
  5. Demonstrated capabilities in leadership, public and community relations, and academic competence.

  1. To implement all District policies and Departmental procedures as they relate to the classroom.
  2. To direct and supervise the conduct of all students in the classroom.
  3. To requisition all necessary instructional materials and supplies necessary to complete the music program (as per music department procedures).
  4. To recommend changes and improvements in the curriculum to the Fine Arts Coordinator.
  5. Assignment of students.

  1. Create and maintain an atmosphere conducive to equitable learning in accordance to the district's mission and vision.
  2. Guarantee that every child shall have an equal opportunity to develop any music talent he or she has.
  3. Instruct children.
  4. Inspire and motivate students to achieve the maximum of their capabilities in learning new skills and to absorb knowledge.
  5. Encourage each child and help them to develop a sense of worth, dignity, purpose, and self-discipline.
  6. Implement the various programs designed to achieve the educational objectives of the District.
  7. Seek assistance from building level administration and/or the Fine Arts Coordinator, as may be necessary, in case of behavioral problems.
  8. Keep accurate records for each child as may be required by the Fine Arts Coordinator, the Principal, and the District.
  9. Requisition through the Office of the Fine Arts Coordinator instructional materials and supplies as they are required, per music department guidelines.
  10. Attend meetings called by the Fine Arts Coordinator, or Principal(s).
  11. Uses available data to drive instructional decision making.
  12. Attend music department concerts and events as assigned by the Fine Arts Coordinator.
  13. Follow all Music Department guidelines and procedures as outlined by the Fine Arts Coordinator.
  14. Conduct ongoing professional communication with parents of students, including parent-teacher conferences.
  15. Assume other responsibilities and duties as may be assigned by the Fine Arts Coordinator in keeping with the policies of District 86.
  16. Participate in in-service training programs authorized by the District Superintendent.
  17. Participate in workshops and clinics as assigned by the Fine Arts Coordinator.
  18. Develop and prepare a personal plan for continued professional growth.
  19. Seek assistance from the Fine Arts Coordinator, Principal(s), other Administrators, Music Faculty peers, consultants or other specialists to improve teaching abilities, skills and management techniques.
  20. Other responsibilities and duties as may be assigned by the Program Coordinator or Designee.

Basic Description of Duties:

The general music teacher/choir director is responsible for general music instruction to all students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The general music teacher/choir director will utilize the District 86 Fine Arts Curriculum and District adopted instructional materials as the basis for the majority of music instruction in the choral and general music classes.

The general music teacher/choir director is responsible for the complete instruction of one or more Jr. High School level (grades 6, 7, 8) choir(s). The Junior High level choir meets as a curricular class on a daily basis during the school day. It is the choir director's duty to evaluate each choir student as an individual and the choir as a whole to provide appropriate instruction.

The general music teacher/choir director is responsible for the preparation of students for all performances; including concerts and contests.
