JOB TITLE: Mechanic (6.0 hrs/day)/Bus Driver (2.0 hrs/day)

REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY: The primary purpose of this position is to inspect, repair, service and perform preventative maintenance on school buses and other District vehicles, as well as transport students to and from school, home and activity destinations in a timely and safe manner. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Criminal history clearance (background and HB 2062).
  3. Valid Oregon Driver's License or Commercial Driver's License, as well as evidence of insurability.
  4. Ability to obtain Oregon Department of Education School Bus Driver's Certification and Annual Bus Inspection Certification, as well as a Commercial Driver's License.
  5. Pass Employment Drug and Alcohol Assessment, as well as pass a school bus driver physical.
  6. Ability to meet the Covid-19 vaccine requirements of OAR 333-019-1030.


SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Performs all types of maintenance on buses and other District vehicles through inspection, servicing and repairing in the shop or in the field.
  2. Diagnoses operating difficulties, makes appropriate repairs, including disassembling and assembling engines and other operating parts of vehicles.
  3. Performs ODE inspections and road tests vehicles.
  4. Inspects school District vehicles and equipment for safety hazards; reports and/or corrects as needed.
  5. Responds to any vehicle emergency that arises as requested.
  6. Provides own mechanical hand tools as approved by supervisor.
  7. Drives buses and vans on regular routes, activity trips, and field trips in a variety of weather conditions.
  8. Monitors student behavior and enforces rules, maintains order among student passengers, and makes referrals as needed.
  9. Informs students of vehicle regulations, safety procedures, and conducts safety drills as required.
  10. Exercises sound judgment in varying weather conditions, on various surfaces and changing traffic conditions.
  11. Participates in district required meetings and training activities as required.
  12. Maintains the appropriate amount of classroom hours for a school bus certificate and bus inspection certificate.
  13. Works well with others, communicating effectively (orally and in writing) with students, parents, and staff.
  14. Computer/technology skills desired.
  15. Spanish speaking skills desired.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary (Code 10/Mechanic - Code 9/Driver) and benefits based on current OSEA Salary Schedule and negotiated agreement. Extra hours may be available for athletic trips. Starting: September 2022.
