Job Description

Creswell School District is seeking highly skilled candidates for the District Mechanic position within the District's Transportation Department; responsible for all school bus and District vehicle repairs and maintenance.

This is a 12-month employee position based on 259 workdays (8 hours per day).

Position open until filled. Applicant screening begins immediately.

Position Description

Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • Perform repair, routine maintenance, and preventative maintenance on District's school bus fleet and support vehicles. Work includes diesel and gasoline engine repair, air and standard brake repair and replacement, transmission work, electrical, and general maintenance of the fleet.
  • Troubleshooting all school bus systems and diagnosing problems.
  • Develop preventative maintenance schedule for District's fleet.
  • Order parts and supplies. Work with vendors and suppliers. Complete necessary paperwork and records.
  • Ability to work in a team environment. Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Review and evaluate repair orders from drivers.
  • Fuel buses as needed.
  • Maintain shop area in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Drive a daily bus route or fill-in as needed.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications



Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate.
  • Experience: Experience in school bus or major diesel vehicle repair, automotive and equipment repair.
  • Licenses/Certificates: Oregon Department of Education Annual School Bus Inspector's Certificate and a class B Oregon CDL driver license or demonstrate the ability to obtain both; good driving record; Criminal Justice Fingerprint and Background Clearance. (part of the application process) CPR/First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within 120 days of hire.
  • Knowledge/Skills: Base of knowledge and skills that will allow applicants to work unsupervised or with very little supervision. Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of a school bus, traffic signs and devices, safe motor vehicle driving techniques: State and District rules regarding traffic safety, student discipline and passenger loading
  • Ability: Must able to maintain a positive relationship with staff and supervisor; be willing to continue to learn; be an effective time manager; be adaptable to a fast-paced and unpredictable working environment and schedule.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. College level and technical, welding training desirable.
  • Physical Abilities: Frequent lifting of equipment and parts weighing up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting up to 100 pounds is typical; use of hands and arms in continuous activity associated with vehicle repair is common; must be able to work in awkward positions, including while lying on back, stooping and crouching; must be able to climb a ladder. Position responsibilities comprise heavy work and require mobility
