The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs and serves over 21,000 students in grades Pre K-12. 78% of SCSD students qualify for free or reduced lunch price, and approximately 20% are served by the Office of Special Education. 77% of the students in the school district are students of color.


The Manufacturing Technology Pre-Apprenticeship program will prepare students at the high school level to be considered to be first in line for a Registered Apprenticeship as an Industrial Manufacturing Technician. Students will receive over 600 hours of classroom instruction in addition to at least 100 hours of on-the-job training in the manufacturing field of their choice. Students will receive assistance in matching up their interests and skills to a specific manufacturing career and will learn basic technical and career readiness skills that will prepare them for full apprenticeship. Students will participate in a variety of work-based learning activities including professional career coaching from one of over 45 local business partners, workplace visits, job shadowing, part-time school year and full-time summer internships, and paid pre-apprenticeship positions, with transportation arranged by SCSD.


Under general direction of the school principal, the teacher provides leadership in an educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. Provides supervision to students in a variety of school related settings, monitors and evaluates student outcomes, develops, selects or modifies lessons plans to ensure all student needs are met, and maintains appropriate records and follows all policies and procedures of the Syracuse City School District. Provides quality standards-based instruction in the area of Manufacturing and related Technologies; assesses and encourages student progress, manages an effective learning environment to maximize student achievement.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal


  • Teach freshman - seniors in the Manufacturing Technology Pre-Apprenticeship CTE pathway in a classroom setting following the program curriculum using project-based techniques.
  • Use embedded work-based learning activities such as informational interviewing, job shadowing, and career mentoring.
  • Maintain an engaging and productive learning environment for students.
  • Collaborate with content teachers to design project-based learning opportunities for students.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, other teachers, member of the Manufacturing Association of Central New York, parents, and community members in the education of students.
  • Have industry background and be willing to obtain a teaching license. Resources are available to assist.
  • Establish and maintain an orderly and productive classroom and lab environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in Manufacturing and related technologies activities and modify instructional methods to fit student's individual needs.
  • Participate in professional development to stay knowledgeable of current developments in the Manufacturing Technology field. This includes, but is not limited to, attending seminars, workshops, and/or participating in professional learning communities (PLC).
  • Prepare instructional materials aligned with curriculum standards, maintains equipment, supplies, and other resources and maintains inventory records in accordance with district policies and procedures.
  • Work with staff and post-secondary institutions to develop and maintain career pathways, which prepare students for apprenticeship, certification, community college, or university degree programs.
  • Coordinate CTE Student Organization activities for local, regional, state and/or national competition.
  • Attend District meetings as scheduled.
  • Work with employers and community groups to promote and advance the program and technical skills.
  • Create an instructional environment that is conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Communicate standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students and parents. Meet with students, teaching team and parents.
  • Maintain complete and accurate student academic, attendance, and disciplinary records. Monitor and assesses students' academic progress.
  • Instruct and demonstrate proper safety practices, procedures and standards.
  • Collaborate in the identification, development, implementation and coordination of work study and work-based learning arrangements.
  • Demonstrate techniques to students as a group and one-on-one, helping them to complete lessons, assignments, projects, activities and evaluations.
  • Provide students with clear expectations, continual feedback, and logical consequences.
  • Participate in field trips to post-secondary institutes, worksites, businesses and hands-on workshops.
  • Manage inventory control including purchasing materials, supplies, equipment and tools.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally, the teacher will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the teacher may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs., such as boxes of books and AV/VCR/computer carts. The teacher is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.


  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical area
  • Work experience in such areas as mechanical technology, mechanical engineering, machining, tool and die making, mechanical drafting, metrology, metallurgy and/or hydraulics.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in manufacturing or related industries.
  • At least 1 year of demonstrated success in the applicable career field (preferred).
  • Training and or experience with Culturally Relevant Education (preferred)
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to function in a fast-paced student-centered environment.
  • Have a clear understanding of and commitment to serving the needs of traditional and non-traditional students.
  • Meet requirements to qualify for and then earn a "Transitional A" teacher certificate from the New York State Education Department, which permits the employment of an individual in a specific career and technical education title who does not meet the requirements for a standard certificate but possesses the requisite occupational experience.

  • The current starting salary for SCSD Teachers is $48,500. With proof of outside related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement.
  • Teachers who are assigned to work at schools with extended learning time will receive an additional stipend.
