The LPN, as part of the Health Services team, will be responsible for advising the supervisor on health and safety issues, consulting with students, families and community resources, participating on the special education team, performing nursing duties according to the Washington State Nursing Practice Act.

Essential Functions

  • Assume a role in vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings
  • Direct healthcare needs and emergency situations
  • Assume a role in student immunizations and compliance according to immunization law
  • Administer first aid, medication, and specialized treatment under direction for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children according to District policy and procedures
  • Compiles data for reports for the purpose of assisting in the preparation of required documentation
  • Assist ESD nurse as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in completion of their work activities
  • Communicate with parents regarding student health concerns and illnesses
  • Maintain current health records on every student and alert teachers and principals of those with medical concerns
  • Gather developmental data, assess and prepare written reports, make appropriate referral to ESD School Nurse for additional assistance and advisement in student cases which may require further educational or policy decisions at the direction of the ESD Nurse
  • Availability to attend, with the building principal or ESD Nurse, those home visits as may be deemed necessary by the school principal for the welfare of the student
  • Confer with building staff on health and welfare matters concerning students
  • Availability and desire to continue education in the field of nursing as required to maintain skills required for the position
  • Availability to attend Nurse and Health Services meetings as may be required
  • Provide ongoing consultation and follow-up to the classroom teacher's referrals and investigate and act on routine health concerns and/or injuries with job limitations as set forth for the nurse
  • Disseminate information to or from physicians, parents, or other medical staff
  • Carry out specific 'life support' service functions which may be unique to specific student needs and are 'bodily invasive' requiring medical personnel assistance
  • Direct specific screening programs and activities, conduct diabetes testing and intervention as needed, administer medication
  • May need to be present during IEP meetings
  • Maintain updated knowledge of school policies and procedures that affect this position
