Job Description

The essential duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

1. Work with the assigned student(s) within the classroom environment or other environments within the school setting to assist in the completion of individual lessons and implement goals and objectives of the school, classroom, and student IEP/504 plans.
2. Provide individual and/or small group instruction as determined by the classroom or special education teacher.
3. Collect student data as determined by the supervising teacher.
4. Schedule time as appropriate in each student's class in accordance with the classroom teacher in order to model lessons and monitor student performance.
5. Participate in scheduled planning meetings, as requested.
6. When necessary, assist students in such physical tasks as moving from room to room, using the lavatory, and performing life skills (e.g. brushing teeth, washing hands, etc.). These tasks may include lifting.
7. Recognize that student progress and records are confidential and must be discussed only with appropriate school personnel.
8. Recognize that all communication with parents and other third parties regarding students shall not be the responsibility of the assistant and shall be conducted only by the professional staff.
9. Assist teacher(s) in maintaining appropriate classroom behavior or monitoring specific behavior management plans.
10. Accompany the students on field trips or to job sites, including weeklong and overnight field trips.
11. Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, meals and play periods.
12. Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
13. Participate in in-service programs, as assigned.
14. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
15. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers in assisting them in meeting the needs of children eligible for special education within the mainstreamed regular education environment.
16. Assists the teachers in the construction of learning materials for use by special needs students.
17. Perform any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Building Administrator.
All other responsibilities as assigned by supervision.

This is a 6.5 hour per day, 184 days (178 School Days; 2 workshop days; and 4 paid holidays) and qualifies for District sponsored benefits including District contribution toward health insurance plus fully paid dental, life and long-term disability.

Location Description

Belmont Middle School is part of the Shaker Regional School District, located in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. As we start the 2018-2019 school year, we anticipate an enrollment of approximately 370 students in grades five through eight. Class sizes throughout the school are under 25 students. It is our intent to meet each student's individual needs as best we can.

The mission of Belmont Middle School is to provide a safe and respectful developmentally appropriate learning environment with high expectations that fosters diverse and balanced academics, social and emotional needs while recognizing a partnership between home, school and community.

To utilize the data gathered from a variety of sources to create academic interventions to best meet the needs of all students. School-wide screening will be taken by all students in Grades 5-8 in the areas of Language Arts and Math. The strengths and weaknesses will then be identified to best ensure that instruction is modified for each student so that their individual academic needs are addressed.

To expose students to community service projects and teach them the importance of helping others. Belmont Middle School will continue the tradition of emphasizing the importance of community service for all, through programs such as the Gobble Wobble Food Drive, assistance for families in need, the Jump Rope for Heart, and more.

To increase parent/teacher/student/administration communication. As a staff we will continue to explore every possible scenario to increase parent/teacher/student/administration collaborative communication.

To continue an emphasis on literacy. Belmont Middle School will explore all avenues to increase 1-1 and small group interactions for the benefit of literacy growth for all students. In addition, reading workshop, Title I summer school, creatively addressing instructional time through changes in the schedule and increasing parent involvement, are but a few ideas for advancing literacy instruction/learning.

To explore all avenues to ensure student success on the SAS testing. Staff, students and parents will work together to ensure that our students understand the importance of the SAS testing and make every possible adjustment to ensure that students are successful on the SASs. Learn more about us...
