For more than 15 years, KIPP Austin, KIPP Dallas-Fort Worth, KIPP Houston, and KIPP San Antonio have put thousands of KIPPsters on the path to and through college. Last year, we collectively educated over 25,000 students in more than 50 schools, covering a geographic area of over 400 miles. Our regions have a long history of informal collaboration, with teachers and staff members sharing ideas, curricula, professional development, facilities, finances, end-of-year field trips, and more. As of the 2018-2019 school year, all KIPP schools in Texas join forces as KIPP Texas Public Schools, a state-wide network of schools dedicated to supporting students to and through college!
The Opportunity
KIPP Texas - Houston is seeking a strategic and experienced Managing Director of Operations (MD of Ops) to manage the day-to-day school and transportation operations, support and scale growth, drive efficiencies and standards, and partner with schools so they can better focus on teaching and learning.  This senior leader reports to the KIPP Texas COO, is a member of the KIPP Texas - Houston Superintendent’s cabinet team, and collaborates with the three other MD of Operations across the state.  In addition to being a strategic thought partner, the MD of Ops is responsible for operational execution at all 29+ schools in Houston, managing student transportation for the state, implementing the newly designed operation’s organization structure, and managing a multi-million dollar operating budget.  The MD of Ops is also responsible for anticipating and maintaining a vision for the future operational needs and for recommending strategies, priorities, and projects that will best achieve KIPP Texas’s strategic goals and objectives. 
 The role is an ideal opportunity for a highly motivated, collaborative, results-driven and service minded leader with a passion for fighting to close the achievement gap in Texas.  We are looking for a leader who can see the bigger picture and manage the day to day operations as well as lead locally in Houston and collaborate more broadly across Texas.    
Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the COO and KIPP Texas operations leadership team to provide input and strategic thinking into the KIPP Texas operations organization structure, direction, and vision
  • Partner with the KIPP Texas operations leadership team to develop and execute on the integration of KIPP Texas
  • Lead on the operations leadership talent and development plan to support KIPP Texas - Houston’s growth and succession plans
  • Through impact and influence, work closely with Heads of Schools, School Leaders, and school-based operations leaders to manage the largest region in KIPP Texas

Operations oversight and performance

  • Manage the day to day responsibilities of the Houston school operations function and Texas student transportation function
  • Identify, develop, and implement operational process improvements and policies which standardize and drive efficient and compliant:
    • School operations; school safety, arrival and dismissal, event scheduling, student enrollment and recruitment, space management, teacher duty schedules, testing coordination, etc.
    • Student transportation; student safety procedures, routing, and scheduling, field trips, student behavior, communication systems, vendor management as we outsource service, etc.   

Build a community of school operations leaders and the support structure for 29+ schools in Houston, providing them with leadership training, professional development opportunities, sharing of best practices, team building, standard policies, procedures, and best practices
Build and standardize a statewide community of student transportation leaders and the organizational management structure across the 4 cities, supporting them with leadership training, professional development opportunities, sharing of best practices, team building, standard policies, and procedures
Develop standard KPIs and accountability systems to drive performance and measure success for school operations and student transportation
Lead and introduce new technologies which improve service, lowers costs, and drives efficiencies across both school operations and student busing functions
Support the statewide Construction and Facilities teams on executing KIPP Texas - Houston’s growth plan by the opening of new schools and campuses on time and on budget
Financial performance and oversight

  • Develop and oversee the Houston school operations budget
  • Develop, oversee, and consolidate the KIPP Texas student transportation budget
  • Collaborate with Finance on reporting requirements needed to make decisions and understand where resources are being spent against the plan
  • Assess and identify the most cost-effective investment of operational resources toward systems, staffing, daily operations, and/or product purchases.  Recommend additional savings by making strategic choices, prioritizing needs, consolidating contracts, and driving efficiencies
  • Maintain strong vendor relationships and manage contract and service agreements
  • Ensure school operations and student transportation resources are being managed in a fiscally responsible and compliant manner

Staff management

  • Grow, develop, manage, and oversee a team which consists of two Houston Operations Managers that support school-based operational leaders across KIPP Texas - Houston
  • Hire, develop, manage, and oversee, the KIPP Texas Director of Student Transportation, three student transportation leaders across the state, and ten Houston based campus Bus Coordinators
  • Establish and collaborate with direct reports to establish department goals and objectives which align to the KIPP Texas operation’s goals
  • Manages annual personnel performance appraisal process and completion

Skills and Qualifications
Experience and Background

  • 5+ years of professional work experience in a senior operations leadership role
  • Bachelor’s degree a must.  Graduate degree preferred with a strong preference for candidates with a masters in business or public policy (MBA, MPP/MPA)  
  • Experience in public education or non-profit a strong plus
  • Experience in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and fast-growing organization a strong plus
  • Must have demonstrated experience in building best in class systems, processes, and standards, using data and KPIs to drive accountability and results, being resourceful and strategic so as to save costs and provide better service, and leading change
  • Must have demonstrated experience in leading, motivating, growing, and developing high performing teams which deliver results
  • Must be able to adopt new technology quickly and be very proficient with Microsoft and other productivity tools (BlueJeans, Slack, Google Drive)

Salary is based on years of experience, degree of education, and level of expertise. A competitive benefits package is also offered.
