Overview of Bright Star Schools Alumni Support and College Success (ASCS) Program

The Bright Star Schools Alumni Support and College Success Program (ASCS) is designed to track and support transitioning high school Seniors (12th graders) into higher education and provide continued guidance and support during their post-secondary journey to graduation, for up to six years. The program will oversee college success efforts for Bright Star Schools (BSS) Alumni enrolled in accredited public, private, and vocational colleges across the country. This program is a critical piece of Bright Star Schools' commitment to ensure that all Bright Star students, past and present, are successful in high school and college.

Overview of Position

A designated ASCS Community College & CTE Coordinator will track, coach and support BSS Alumni to and through the community college transfer process, in earning an Associate's degree or a CTE certificate/license.

Duties (Include but are not limited to the following):
  • Collaborate and communicate with Director and Coordinators of ASCS and High School Senior Counselors to strengthen, further develop, and implement the strategic plan for the program based on the organizational vision and goals of Bright Star Schools, to ensure that all Bright Star Schools community college and CTE alumni are prepared to transition through the five stages of the college admission process: aspiration, preparation, application, matriculation, and graduation.
  • Must have a broad knowledge of diverse post-secondary pathways, the California community college transfer process, and be able to provide college and career guidance.

ALUMNI
  • Provide consistent Alumni outreach and college advising in the form of customized support, educational plans, intervention plans, referrals and resources, and tracking to ensure community college students graduate with an Associate's degree, transfer to a CSU, UC, or private university, and CTE students complete and/or graduate from an accredited post-secondary institution.
    • Must have the ability to manage a caseload of several hundred students and meet benchmarks of Alumni outreach.
      • Will initially work with two of the three BSS High Schools with plans to expand to all three in the
        future
    • Must be able to prioritize the level of support for Alumni based on need and college type.
    • Strategize and manage efforts to track credit completion and success of coursework by maintaining continuous contact throughout every semester.
    • Will use National Student Clearinghouse data to track Alumni in conjunction with a cloud-based data platform, GradSnapp, to track students' progress, document support, communication, outcomes, and follow-up if necessary.
    • Analyze data with the ASCS Team at the end of each semester/quarter to evaluate effectiveness of the program and to determine challenges and areas and measures for growth.
  • Maintain regular communication with Alumni through a combination of in-person visits, social media, email, phone calls, text messages, bi-monthly Alumni newsletter and/or Zoom video conferencing.
    • Will "meet" Alumni once a semester, either through in-person visits at local community colleges, higher education institutions, any BSS school campuses, local cafes and/or through video conferencing.
    • Will communicate with every Alumni depending on year in college, 1 -4 times a semester/quarter at a minimum, to check-in and provide support.
  • Planning, coordinating, and executing, in collaboration with the ASCS team, events, programming, and workshops related to financial aid awareness, social-emotional and academic skill building, college and career awareness and preparation, parent engagement, and reunions that increases Alumni connection and support to Bright Star Schools, students and staff.
  • Manage and promote opportunities for Bright Star Alumni that will strengthen their connection to higher education and increase persistence and graduation rates, including first year experience/ summer bridge programs, 1st generation college student programming, job placement, scholarships, networking opportunities, internship opportunities, career development, and general well-being.
  • Support the ASCS team in recruiting and training upper division Alumni to serve as mentors to incoming Freshman in the Bright Star School Alumni Ambassadors Program.
    • Follow-up with Alumni Ambassadors to check progress of Freshman students and efficacy of mentoring program
  • Will publish a monthly Alumni Newsletter, sharing relevant information with the BSS community that showcases our Alumni's challenges and successes in higher education.

HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
  • Thorough on-boarding of seniors into the ASCS program.
    • Educate graduating Seniors and their parents, about benefits and support provided within the Alumni Support Program.
  • Developing, coordinating, and presenting workshops, supporting college preparation/advisory classes, and any Senior activities, programs, and projects that focus on their successful transition to college.
  • Will collaborate and support Senior Counselors with Seniors' college and career exploration, the FAFSA, California Dream Act and scholarship applications, college applications, financial aid analysis, and transitional programming for college entrance.
  • Provide intensive logistical and socio-emotional support throughout the transitional summer season for incoming college Freshman to reduce "Summer Melt."

Partnering Organizations
  • Develop and/or maintain professional relationships with universities, partnering organizations, student equity programs, agencies, and other charter school Alumni Support programs that could provide additional best practices, support and services to alumni such as tutoring, internships, mentorships, summer programs, scholarships, college preparation courses, college placement services, career development, and social-emotional support.

Professional Development
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and education, sponsored by the ASCS program, that is data-driven and research based in increasing 1st-generation college students' persistence, retention, and graduation rates. PD's include attendance at all SoCal CAN meetings, workshops, College Board meetings, conferences, webinars, peer-reviewed articles, journals, publications, and any other current and relevant research.


Qualifications

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's Degree in Education or Pupil Personnel Services (Counseling) credential highly desired
  • At least two to five years' experience advising high school students and/or community college students
  • Experience working in college persistence and success programming
  • Solid understanding of community college transfer resources, requirements, and knowledge of alternative post-secondary pathways
  • Strong knowledge of adolescent development and the ability to connect and build relationships with students
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with institutions, other charter school networks, and support staff.
  • Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities for first-generation college students from low income backgrounds and/or high needs populations
  • Spanish and/or Korean language fluency desirable
  • High level of cultural competency working with and for the Latino, African American, Korean, and LGTBQ communities.
  • Knowledge of the college admissions and financial aid process (FAFSA and California Dream Act).
  • Customer-service and detail oriented
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, advocacy skills, and ability to work well in teams
  • Be able to take initiative, follow up, and follow through on tasks
  • Comfortable using social media and cloud-based data platform to track and support students
  • Experience with event planning and coordination
  • Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment with a proven ability to prioritize, manage, and meet multiple deadlines
