Job Description

Summary: The Secondary Math Specialist will work to increase the math performance throughout the district and help make students globally competitive for jobs requiring math skills. The specialist will also help create and monitor math initiatives, develop student achievement standards, develop training in best practices for teachers and advise principals on strategies for effective math curriculum, instruction and assessment implementation.

Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)
  • Assists in the creation and monitoring of district math initiatives.
  • Reviews math programs being implemented by the respective schools as to their effectiveness in meeting school, learning community and district goals for achieving high academic achievement.
  • Assists in developing training in best practices for teachers, educational initiatives and in-service activities.
  • Develops curriculum-specific training during the school year for teachers in identified schools.
  • Develops partnerships with local universities, colleges, business and community leaders to make students globally competitive.
  • Coordinates with math partners to teach and provide lesson models for teachers.
  • Assists classroom teachers in selecting, locating and securing instructional materials, developing skills and techniques of math education, assessing current math education curricula, and evaluating instructional effectiveness and program success.
  • Analyzes and interprets student and teacher performance data.
  • Develops programming for individual instructional groups by adapting materials and instruction needs to meet the needs of individuals.
  • Conducts classroom observations in order to appraise program and instructional effectiveness.
  • Determines the extent to which the standards of excellence and service in instructional programs are being maintained.
  • Participates in the evaluation and selection of materials and equipment appropriate to teaching math curriculum in identified schools.
  • Represents the district on math at the national, state and local levels.
  • Participates in training programs offered to increase individual skills and proficiency related to assignments.
  • Reviews current development, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:

  • Master's Degree in Math, Education or a related field
  • Three years of successful classroom teaching experience in secondary math
  • Advanced Degree in content area or school administration
Licensing / Certification Requirements: Possession of a NC teaching license; possession of or ability to obtain NC Curriculum and Instructional Specialist license.

  • Thorough knowledge/training in best practices and instructional strategies for use with the expansion of the comprehensive math model.
  • Knowledge and commitment to decentralized decision-making and accountability for results that facilitate creative processes toward student achievement
  • Knowledge of support services delivery systems.
  • Knowledge of mathematical standards and practical application to math instruction.
  • Knowledge of Title I laws, policies, processes and procedures.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with people to focus resources (both human and financial) toward achievement of expected results.
  • Ability to facilitate group processes in consensus building, conflict resolution, planning and decision-making.
  • Understands that quality teaching and learning are the essential processes and products of public schools and has the ability to focus human and financial resources toward this end.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and departments.
  • Ability to develop, prepare and conduct professional development opportunities for school staff.
  • Ability to value diversity and meet the needs of a diverse population.
  • Ability to manage time, meet deadlines, and bring closure by following projects to completion.
  • Ability to interpret educational policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
