Job Description

Title: Performing Arts Center Manager

Reports to: Superintendent or Designee

Qualifications: Undergraduate Degree in Theatre (preferably technical theatre) or equivalent experience;

Meets all mandated health requirements (negative tuberculosis test) etc.; Documentation of a clear criminal record

Responsibilities: The Performing Arts Center Manager has the daily responsibility for the technical operations of the Performing Arts Center (PAC), including lighting, sound, set design and construction, and coordinating necessary maintenance. The PAC Manager is responsible for the scheduling of all events in the PAC and associated spaces. The PAC Manager will work on a flexible schedule basis, be present, and essential as expected and needed, at most major events or programs at the PAC to ensure appropriate facility utilization. The PAC Manager works with a great deal of independence and exercises independent judgment in performing a wide variety of duties.

The PAC Manager will be called upon to deal with a wide range of technical issues, and must possess a working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, dance, music productions and presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design implementation. The PAC Manager is responsible for overall stage management, computerized lighting systems, stage carpentry, appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Specific knowledge of the technical capabilities of the PAC will be needed or will need to be quickly acquired.

The PAC represents a substantial district investment and the use of this facility brings considerable public relations and legal exposure; therefore the PAC Manager will be one who is capable of enforcing the established use policies in a cordial but firm and consistent manner. Specific knowledge of the PAC, Bowling Green City Schools (BGCS), and the Bowling Green Community and its constituencies will be needed or will need to be quickly acquired.

First and foremost, priority of use of the PAC is provided to performance groups within the Bowling Green School District. This will include the PAC Manager's involvement with students to provide instruction and hands-on experience in the technical operations of the PAC.

Office hours are primarily weekdays, but responsibilities require additional hours and flexibility that will include evenings and weekends to fulfill the PAC Manager's duties during PAC events.

  • Experience with the technical aspects of performance including an in-depth understanding of lighting and sound systems, equipment, set-ups, safety, and security programs
  • Possessive of a high level of motivation; capable of considerable self-direction; possessive of strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Experience in working with various individuals and constituency groups, both school-based (students, faculty, staff, administration) and community organizations
  • Well-organized with evidence of the ability to receive information, process needs, create solutions, and communicate effectively with stakeholders
  • Familiarity with the technical needs of cultural and entertainment performance groups and contractual relationships
  • Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the PAC, including the supervision of use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities
  • Determine the technical supports and special needs necessary for events and performances at the PAC in advance of production dates
  • Design, set up, maintain, and operate lighting and sound systems
  • Assist guest designers and artists with technical matters
  • Serve as Technical Director and/or Lighting Designer for annual High School Spring Musical
  • Provide learning opportunities and instructional activities for BGCS students
  • Advise production managers and lighting and sound designers on the technical specifications, cost and usage of technical equipment
  • Supervise the implementations of approved technical designs
  • Supervise and assist with set and stage construction and management
  • Assist in recruiting, training and assignment of student, volunteer or paid technical staff for individual shows
  • Be present for all events in the PAC and/or recruit and train event staff to stand in
  • Orient facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of the PAC and its operations
  • Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment
  • Arrange for the repair and replacement of equipment within budgetary constraints
  • Perform preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Maintain inventory and order specialized supplies
  • Attend technical week rehearsals in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the performance
  • Coordinate and collaborate with BGCS faculty and staff regarding PAC events
  • Collaborate with facilities staff to fulfill all setup and logistical needs for PAC events
  • Serve as primary contact for all facility issues with the performance hall and its systems
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of various groups, vendors, co-workers, students, and others
  • Manage the PAC calendar, including the scheduling of BGCS performances, community and business rentals, special events and community groups
  • Cultivate relationships and seek contributions and sponsorships
  • Assist in the creation of a fee schedule/process for facility rental specific to various constituencies
  • Review all performance contracts specific to: rentals, special and corporate events, as well as musical, theatrical and other artist events
  • Provide oversight and organization of rental client events, acting in the capacity of House Manager and Stage Manager/Event Technician
  • Serve as primary contact for all PAC rentals, from initial inquiries through invoicing
  • Maintain flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Submit quarterly reports detailing feedback on the PAC facility, technical capabilities, and performances and events to the Superintendent or designee
  • Ensure the safety of all participants and attendees
  • Represent BGCS and the PAC in the community
  • Assume other duties as assigned

Supervisory Under the direction of the Superintendent or Designee: acts in the capacity

Responsibility: of technical/stage manager during rehearsals, performances and other events; communicates with all persons of authority regarding performances; collaborates with the facilities staff and teachers.
