TITLE:READING SPECIALIST QUALIFICATIONS: 1.Education: Bachelor's degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. Completion of Reading Recovery training is desired. 2.Credential: Any valid credential issued by the State of Arizona authorizing service in a self-contained classroom. A reading certificate required, or ability to receive a limited term variable waiver of the reading certificate. 3.Experience: At least three (3) years of successful classroom teaching (preferable at more than one grade level) is required before assignment to this position. 4.Personal Qualities: Personal Qualities: Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a positive example for students. The Reading Specialist Teacher will have the ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health and must be well organized and have the ability to work with a variety of people including parents, students, and staff. SUPERVISED BY:School Principal TERMS OF Ten (10) month year. EMPLOYMENT: SALARY:Salary is to be determined by district pay scale and Board. POSITION GOAL:The Reading Specialist is responsible for helping students correct reading difficulties, and the correction of reading disabilities at the earliest possible time in the educational career of the student. DUTIES AND 1.First priority shall be supplementing reading instruction with an RESPONSIBILITIES: emphasis on the prevention of reading difficulties. 2. Second priority shall be providing supplementary, specialized diagnostic and prescriptive instruction to small groups of pupils or to individual pupils in need of reading instruction. 3. Final priority shall be providing corrective instruction to individuals and small groups of pupils. 4.Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student. 5.Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning environment in the classroom. 6.Assess and evaluate each student's academic and social growth, keeping appropriate records and communicating with teachers and/or parents on the individual's progress. 7.Create a functional and attractive classroom environment for learning through displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers. 8.Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities. Other Duties and Responsibilities 1.Select and requisition books, instructional equipment, and instructional supplies, maintaining required inventory records. 2.Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday. 3.Participate in or assist with curriculum development and/or other developmental programs at the school and/or district level. 4.Share in the sponsoring of student activities and participate on faculty committees.
