This position of custodian is established by the Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District Committee for the purpose of having a qualified person whose job is to help maintain a clean, safe, and attractive school environment. The work entails following a systematic procedure for cleaning designated areas in and around the school plant. Responsibilities and Duties: 1.Perform all tasks assigned by the Facilities Manager and Evening Custodial Supervisor according to the standards outlined in the Department's Standards of Cleaning Procedures, to insure the constant maintenance of a clean, safe, and attractive environment for all inhabitants and users of the facilities and grounds. 2.Undertake repairs for which qualified and able to perform. 3.Remain current with information and instruction provided regarding proper use of cleaning, maintenance materials and equipment. 4.Perform general building maintenance tasks as necessary. 5.Clean lavatories and fixtures, corridors, rugs, windows, floors, walls, furniture and other building furnishings. Be familiar with operation and maintenance of power scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, vacuums and other similar facilities and custodial equipment. 6.Watch for, respond to, and report safety hazards. 7.Possess a basic understanding of the chemicals and processes used in the cleaning schedule. 8.Periodically read all MSDS forms relating to the chemicals used by the maintenance staff. 9.Utilize all required safety equipment necessary to perform maintenance tasks when hazardous work is performed. 10.May be required to work a varying schedule when the need arises. 11.May be required to perform snow removal tasks if the need arises. 12.Utilize all required safety equipment necessary to perform tasks when hazardous work is performed. Ensure proper procedures are followed in blood borne pathogen and other similar hazardous cleanup is required. Ability to address situations that may not be to pleasant to correct. 13.May be required to change work shift from an evening shift to a day shift during summer hour to complete a team project cleaning approach. May be asked to cover events or other similar activities on weekends and other after hour events. 14.Other duties as assigned and within the scope of the position. Able to maintain a confident and professional relationship on a daily basis when communicating with staff throughout the assigned cleaning zone and school. 7.Be capable of handling minor repairs. 8.Be physically and emotionally capable of carrying-out responsibilities and duties of a custodian. This position requires frequent physical exertion. Several hours a day will be spent walking, standing, sitting and climbing whenever necessary. Activities include moderate to frequent physical exertion in body movements such as reaching, bending and twisting. The position also requires moderate to frequent grasping, pushing, and pulling of materials. Custodial staff are frequently expected to lift 20-50 pound items. Must be able, if necessary, to shovel snow or operate snow removal equipment, and will be required to use hand and power tools and equipment. 9.Be able to work indoors and outdoors. This may involve extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, and heat/ cold extremes. Custodial staff are frequently exposed to cleaning chemicals, power tools and equipment, and other hazardous situations that may be encountered during the performance of his or her duties. 10.Possess some experience in maintenance and/or custodial work. 11.Possess a valid driver's license and good driving record in order to be authorized to operate Valley Tech's vehicles. 12.Possess adequate reading, writing, and communication skills to perform the essential functions of the position. 13.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Facilities Manager may find appropriate and acceptable. 14.Be available to work overtime as needed. Line of Authority: 1.Responsible directly to the Facilities Manager and Evening Custodial Supervisor Conditions of Employment: 1.This position is rated as a full-time assignment which provides custodial service according to an established schedule when school is in session and also provides for general cleaning and maintenance as assigned by the Evening Custodial Supervisor and Facilities Manager when school is not in session throughout the calendar year. The second shift will be eight and one-half hours long, consisting of 8 work hours (2:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. however, schedules may vary as needed) with a half-hour non-paid lunch period per day. The regular scheduled cleaning shift will be 2:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.; however, this schedule will and/or may change to a 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. shift, or similar, to accommodate team cleaning during school vacation and/or summer break. This position may also be asked or required to work a day during the weekend to cover an event or other special task. 2.Compensation is based on successful candidate's credentials, approvals and experience.
