General Summary:

The Special Education Assistant (Early Childhood Special Education-ECSE) provides assistance to Early Childhood Special Education students in the classroom. He/she reports to the principal and teacher of the program (Monday - Thursday). Program runs September - May.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists Early Childhood Special Education students with all aspects of attending school. Works under the direction of the Special Education teacher to adapt lessons and materials to fit needs of Early Childhood Special Education students. Assists Early Childhood Special Education students in physical education, music, art, lunch, assemblies, and recess as needed. Works in a consistent and individualized manner with Early Childhood Special Education Works in areas of self-help (toileting, diapering, dressing, feeding, dispensing medications per district policy). Assists with physical challenges (equipment, wheel-chairs, scribing, daily life skills, communication devices). Maintains classroom records for Early Childhood Special Education students (attendance, behavior documentation, bus attendance, lunch count) as requested by the teacher. Takes part in planning meetings as requested. Attends training or in-services. Accompanies Early Childhood Special Education students on field trips as requested Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma. Previous college credit, WorkKeys certification or college degree preferred. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel. Previous experience working with children. Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture children. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to follow directions. Ability to work independently. Ability to assist with maintaining records of student progress. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to resolve conflict. Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information. Willingness to attend training. Ability to remain calm under stressful situations.
