Department: Student Services Department, Special Education Job Title: Special Education Teacher- Severe Licensure FLSA Status:

Summary:
Special Education teachers work directly with students who have been identified as having an education disability and who are found eligible for an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
The special education teacher is responsible for implementing the services on the IEP as well as collaboratively working with all members of an IEP team to ensure student progress. Special Education teachers must be prepared to work with students with a variety of learning profiles and be open to continued training on supporting students of all disability types and neurodiversities.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Required: Masters degree in special education
  • Certified in severe special needs.
  • Prior experience working with students with intensive/complex special needs.
  • Ability to handle multitude of varying and complex issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 2-5 years experience teaching in a school environment
  • knowledge of low incidence disabilities and their impact on the school environment
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (Not Limited To):
  • Special Education teachers must be prepared to work with students with a variety of learning profiles which can range from moderate to severe
  • Special Education teachers provide direct and/or consultation services to students on IEPs
  • Training, support, and modeling for Special Education Aides and Behavior Therapists
  • De-escalation and interventions to support students emotional regulation and maintenance of their self esteem
  • Providing instruction to students in all content areas and/or modified of general education curriculum
  • Consulting to general education teachers to support implementation of accommodations in the classroom
  • Modifying curriculum with a focus on Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Special Education teachers develop specialized educational and behavioral programs to meet student's individual needs and individual learning profiles
  • Special Education teachers collaborate with other IEP team members to ensure student progress on IEP goals
  • Special Education teachers complete required paperwork, evaluate students with systematic methods using formal and informal assessments, write evaluations and progress reports.
  • Special Education Teachers both proctor MCAS and/or compile and submit MCAS alternate assessments
  • Elementary: Special Education teachers will contribute to development of the IEP and organize extended school year programming needs per the IEP.
  • Secondary: As the case manager- coordinate IEP development, transition planning and any extended school year programming needs as per the IEP. They may also be required to chair team meetings.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
Work Environment:
  • Must be physically able to respond (e.g. push, pull, or carry at least 60 lbs) to students who are physically unsafe and use physical restraints as part of a de-escalation process.
  • Must be able to physically respond to students who have bolted from the building or who need physical redirection.
  • Must be able to physically maintain a safe learning environment, including moving furniture in response to a crisis situation.
  • Other duties as needed
