Job Description: Assistant Principal of Student Culture

Reporting to: Principal

Assistant Principal: The Assistant Principal of Culture is responsible for leading a safe, inclusive, affirming, and joyful school community that supports student learning and growth. This role is also responsible for a variety of non-academic programs, including student leadership development, restorative practices, and social emotional learning. The Assistant Principal of Culture is an integral part of the School Leadership Team and supervises the Dean of Students, Dean of Restorative Practices, School Counselors, and any additional relevant support staff that the school may employ. The ideal candidate excels at developing relationships with students, families, teachers, and colleagues based on mutual respect, integrity and trust, in pursuit of school goals and vision.

Qualifications & Experience

An admin credential is highly desired for this position.

Minimum:
  1. Valid, Clear, California Teaching Credential or PPS Credential
  2. At least five years of teaching and/or counseling experience with consistent student achievement and growth
  3. Consistent successful student outcomes in prior teaching or counseling experience with student populations similar to that of Stella MiddleCharter Academy (primarily from low-income, educationally underserved communities)
  4. Evidence of strong organizational, student management and interpersonal skills.
  5. Extremely high standards for student academic work and student behavior - belief that all of our students (who are primarily from low-income, educationally underserved communities) will be able to rise to the same academic challenges and compete at the top levels with all students, regardless of background.
  6. Ability to work collaboratively as a team player and delegate as appropriate.
  7. Experience leading a team of educators to successful outcomes in a school setting.
  8. Experience leading high quality staff professional development.
  9. Foundational understanding of Restorative Justice and CA Ed Code
  10. Experience leading and/or participating in School Programming/Events
  11. Working knowledge of Google Apps and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) plus an aptitude for quickly learning and mastering other data-based programs.
  12. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Willingness to quickly digest and, when needed, create documents for the school community (students, teachers, parents).
  13. Understanding of and agreement with our student, parent, and employee expectations (handbooks).
  14. Industriousness and Enthusiasm: doing whatever it takes to ensure success - defined as helping our students to do whatever is necessary for them to academically, socially and emotionally conquer the challenges of middle school.
  15. Humility, receptiveness to feedback, evidence of being a constant learner.


Desired (but not required) in order of importance:
  1. At least one year of experience in an instructional coaching or administrative role.
  2. Administrative credential, or willingness to pursue.
  3. Experience supervising other employees.
  4. Fluency in a second language. Willingness to learn Spanish if that isn't the language of fluency.
  5. Post-graduate degree (Masters or Doctoral degree)

Responsibilities and Duties

In conjunction with the Principal, the AP will create, and push the school's vision forward. Support and work with 50-60 school site personnel including teachers and office staff.

The following programs are under the direct supervision of the Assistant Principal of Culture:

  1. *School Culture: In tandem with the Principal, and Leadership Team, uphold the School Culture Framework.
  2. Oversees school site culture team in order to execute schoolwide culture framework
  3. Acts as the champion of Social Justice and Values on campus
  4. Leads and/or co-leads Culture Walk Throughs
  5. Develops, implements, and monitors systems for relationship building and mentoring of staff and students
  6. Oversees supervision of students (arrival, breaks, dismissal)
  7. Plans and leads schoolwide events including, but not limited to:
  8. Weekly Clubs
  9. Monthly School Culture Assemblies
  10. WEB Crew Development (student mentorship program)
  11. Spirit Weeks
  12. Homeroom Challenges
  13. Fall Festival
  14. Field Day
  15. Field Trips
  16. Monthly Heritage Celebrations
  17. Coordinates Student Leadership and Student Activities
  18. Oversees development, implementation, and monitoring of Social Emotional Learning program (further developed in section 2)
  19. Leads the Culture Team (including Dean of Restorative Practices and Dean of Student Culture) to set the vision, develop staff capacity and monitors implementation of Restorative Justice Practices within and outside of the classrooms
  20. Creating an inclusive community on campus where students have a sense of belonging
  21. Facilitate conflict resolution and behavior intervention for students
  22. Initiate Community Building and Restorative Justice Circles and design prompts for GenEd and 5% groups
  23. Develops and implements culture data tracking programs (Deans List) for stakeholder use (e.g. interventions, supports, rewards, communication)
  24. Collaborates with Data Team to report school's data regarding student discipline
  25. Leads all expulsion and/or suspension meetings and investigations with appropriate communication to all involved stakeholders
  26. Collaborate with the School Leadership Team and district leaders
  27. Attends weekly School Leadership Team Meetings
  28. Leads weekly Culture Leadership Team meetings
  29. Works in collaboration with the BSS network leaders, including the VP for Student and Family Services and the Senior Director of Culture in Schools, and other school leaders across the district for collaboration, alignment and growth
  30. Works in conjunction with the VP for Student and Family Services and the Senior Director of Culture in Schools
  31. Attends all PD regarding culture
  32. Support after school programming and partnerships with community agencies
  33. *Leads and oversees Compass; SMCA's SEL Programming/Curriculum:
  34. Participate in summer professional development on the Compass program
  35. Ensure integration of Compass SEL curriculum through the Compass blocks throughout the week
  36. Provide professional development and ongoing support for teachers to implement Compass curriculum and facilitate Compass Circles
  37. Conduct weekly walkthroughs of Compass Circles and provide weekly feedback to teachers
  38. Facilitate weekly Faculty Compass Circles to promote continual growth of faculty and build community
  39. Parent education sessions on social emotional and academic learning
  40. *Work directly with counselors to evaluate and oversee development of scope and sequence for workshops grounded in the ASCA National model
  41. general implementation of the ASCA National model
  42. RAMP certification application
  43. use of student data to proactively support Social Emotional Learning
  44. analysis of academic data to provide appropriate interventions and support
  45. Work with Counselor to initiate and follow through with SSPT/504 Plans (training will be provided)
  46. counselor's professional goals and support growth through coaching
  47. *Work directly with teachers to evaluate and oversee:
  48. Leads instructional coaching with a caseload of teachers
  49. weekly coaching meetings with all teachers on your caseload that include professional goal setting conversations, planning conversations, observation debriefs, and analysis of student learning conversations
  50. Supports teachers' development goals and support growth through coaching cycles and coaching interactions with their caseload of teachers
  51. Collection and analysis of subgroup data (race, socioeconomic status, gender, students with disabilities, English Language Learners) in relation to SEL surveys
  52. enforcement by teachers and staff of the rules and procedures as outlined in the teacher and administrative handbooks
  53. Leads Professional Development.
  54. Works with the School Leadership Team to create a yearlong scope and sequence plan for staff Professional Development. The Assistant Principal of Culture will take the lead on planning and executing culture PDs.
  55. *Manages school wide family engagement initiatives:
  56. Creates cultural programs informed by family and student surveys
  57. Collaborates with school and organizational staff to create and implement family engagement plan
  58. Ensure school meets LCAP goals with respect to family engagement, which
  59. Provide family resources and referrals for community events
  60. Collaborate with Counseling and Culture teams to implement interventions with students and families
  61. Offer resources and support for family challenges
  62. Participates in home visits as needed to ensure home and school partnerships


Commitment

This is a full time role. The commitment for this position is approximately 40 hours per week. The general hours of operation of the schools are Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The specific hours for the Assistant Principal will vary depending on teacher and campus needs. As a member of the leadership team, the Assistant Principal must be flexible with regard to the daily and weekly schedule.

The Assistant Principal is also expected to attend an average of two evening events per month (approx. 1.5-2 hr commitment to each such event or program). The position also requires out-of-town days each year including our student life experience lessons and an annual faculty retreat/team building experience. The calling of the position often requires a time commitment beyond the basic hours.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary: Starts at 85K based on credential status and years of experience.

Status: Full Time

Start Date: An exceptional candidate will assume the full time role no later than April 2024
