Purpose of Position

The Managing Director, Math and Science will ensure that the highest quality reviews are published on EdReports.org by overseeing all mathematics and science materials reviews, leading strategic initiatives within and across the Academic Office, and collaborating with mathematics and science leaders nationwide. EdReports has an impressive track record of success in providing information about curricular programs through our online reports and has published over 1,100 reports on our website. We have documented use by districts representing more than 12M students and national surveys show that EdReports is the best-known and utilized resource for supporting curriculum decision-making in the country. The Managing Director, Math and Science reports directly to the VP, Content and oversees both Math and Science content review teams.

The Managing Director, Math and Science will build on this success and deepen the work of the Mathematics and Science teams. You will lead a team of professionals and collaborate with stakeholders to:

  • Oversee the review process: Manage the entire lifecycle of mathematics and science instructional material reviews, from pipeline development to publication.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team: Guide, mentor, and support the Mathematics and Science teams, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
  • Champion thought leadership: Bring an extensive network to the fold; Identify and leverage opportunities to elevate EdReports' profile within the mathematics and science education communities to expand and engage the network(s). 
  • Drive organizational learning: Foster a culture of continuous improvement by capturing and disseminating learnings from reviews and stakeholder engagements.
  • Collaborate across teams: Partner with colleagues in Literacy, Multilingual Learners, Reviewer Engagement, Learning Solutions, Research and Learning, and other departments to ensure alignment and effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Organization's Mathematics and Science Reviews and Review Strategy (60%)

  • Supervise and coach the Mathematics and Science teams.
  • Plan and oversee the review process for K-12 mathematics and science instructional materials.
  • Ensure high-quality, evidence-rich, and well-calibrated reviews.
  • Collaborate with publishers to acquire materials and communicate throughout the review process.
  • Partner with other content area teams to develop, refine, and align processes and strategies shared across the review function.

Thought Leadership and External Engagements (15%)

  • Identify and execute thought leadership opportunities in mathematics and science education.
  • Conduct outreach and present EdReports' findings to diverse audiences.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on mathematics and/or science education trends and research.

Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning (15%)

  • Establish and maintain a feedback loop with reviewers, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Translate review insights into actionable strategies for continuous improvement and further analysis, in collaboration with our research team.
  • Develop processes for managing new projects and staffing needs.

Organizational Leadership (10%)

  • Contribute to organizational strategy and governance through work with other leaders
  • Lead and support cross-functional teams on various projects.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Director, Literacy to ensure alignment and growth across review areas.
  • Promote a culture of knowledge sharing and innovation.

Key Qualifications

Lead Organization's Mathematics and Science Reviews and Review Strategy

  • 10+ years of experience in instructional leadership roles in areas of Math and Science within school districts, state departments of education, or non-profit organizations;
  • Deep content expertise in mathematics and/or science curriculum and alignment with relevant standards (e.g., Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards);
  • 5+ years of experience supervising teams, with proven expertise in managing multi-layered teams through complex changes and ambiguity, preferably in start-ups, non-profits, or growing organizations.
  • Demonstrated success in team management, development, and culture building across lines of difference;
  • Expertise in mathematics and/or science education policy and the national standards landscape;
  • Possess an understanding or experience with research, Culturally Responsive Teaching, and Culturally Centered Education and best practices to support multilingual learners.

Thought Leadership and External Engagements

  • Exceptional written and spoken communications and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build support for current and new initiatives across a diverse range of  stakeholders and audiences both internally and externally; 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in leading high-quality professional development and adult learning sessions;
  • Demonstrated commitment to elevating and promoting educator voice and educator leadership.

Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning

  • Proven strategic and project management skill set, including the ability to effectively manage multiple stakeholders and meet ambitious timelines and deliverables;  
  • Experience overseeing budgets and staffing complex projects;  
  • Ability to manage and prioritize amongst competing demands and deadlines, while  continuing to produce high-quality work. 

Organizational Leadership

  • A commitment to uphold EdReports organizational core values and norms;  
  • An ability to work independently and collaborate with colleagues and educators in a virtual work environment;  
  • Experience leading in agile environments where continuous learning, expansion, and the adaptation of systems and processes co-exist;
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, science, education, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).

Salary

The salary for this position is $129,000 - $139,000 annually. At EdReports, in determining a final salary for a position, we consider the role and the experience and skill needed while striving to maintain equity in our compensation bands. For this and other reasons, our salary offers are non-negotiable.

Travel: Up to 15%

National travel will happen occasionally throughout the year, as needed for partner relations, service delivery, organizational retreats, and professional learning. 

Physical Requirements

Including, but not limited to standing and sitting for long periods of time; speaking loudly and clearly; seeing and hearing things both near and far away; and reaching, stooping, kneeling, and fine-finger and hand manipulation in use of a computer, chalkboard, dry erase board, or projector.  Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing an  analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading. This  person will travel by car, air, or other transportation (as indicated above) and should be able to  physically withstand the demands of frequent travel. Employee may be required to walk for long  distances at event venues, conference and training locations, or other relevant sites.
