About Building Impact Partners
Building Impact Partners (Building Impact) is a philanthropy advising firm that works with changemakers who want to solve big challenges — and move people, communities and society forward for good. With expertise spanning philanthropy advising, social innovation and advocacy, our team has the insights, imagination and determination to build effective solutions that endure. We believe philanthropy can be an engine for systems change. That’s why we work with and across the philanthropic community to build the knowledge, skills and mindsets needed to build a more just and equitable world.

Building Impact is a completely remote organization. The Analyst will have the flexibility to work anywhere in the United States, though some travel and the ability to work with clients in various U.S. time zones is required.

Overview of Roles & Responsibilities
The Analyst role is a generalist position that requires a broad range of skills, including problem solving, task management, project planning, desk research, analysis and synthesis, proficient Google Slides and Sheets capabilities, and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities. Ideal candidates for this role will thrive with a high volume of work, a fast pace, and a wide variety of tasks and projects. The Analyst will be part of two- to three-person client engagement teams made up of a Partner, Associate, and/or various Independent Contractors. Engagements may include work with funders or program officers, nonprofits that are key to a funder’s vision, and/or hands-on implementation of initiatives that Building Impact is managing on behalf of the funder.

Common day-to-day tasks include: creating agendas for client meetings; taking notes on stakeholder interviews for a landscape analysis; conducting desk research and synthesizing it for the engagement team; designing slide decks and coordinating other team members’ contributions; project planning; creating charts and graphs; drafting succinct memos and custom tools to support clients’ needs; and responding in real time to client requests. The Analyst’s priority is providing superior service to the other members of the engagement team, allowing the Partner and/or Associate to focus on providing exceptional customized service and partnership to the client.

Competitive candidates will have three to five years work experience in the social sector, whether that is for a direct service nonprofit in a specific field like housing, education, healthcare, etc., philanthropy, consulting, or in the policy and advocacy space. The Analyst will gain exposure to many aspects of Building Impact’s work in philanthropy and the social sector while developing a broad set of skills that are central to enabling social impact. Past Analysts have gone on to serve as Program Officers within foundations, Program Managers in nonprofits, Associates within Building Impact, Independent Contractors, and other positions of emerging leadership within the social sector.

The core responsibilities are as follows:

  • Support the engagement by updating trackers, project planning, gathering information, drafting slide decks, creating charts and graphs, organizing data or files, scheduling meetings, taking meeting notes, sending out follow ups, and any other relevant tasks
  • Draft deliverables with the necessary details, design, and branding, including memos, slide decks, charts, graphs, or agendas that are require little editing by colleagues to be shared with clients
  • Schedule and participate in stakeholder interviews, and then organize the interview data and identify key themes
  • Identify solutions to challenges that present during client engagements
  • Collaborate with team members to develop high-impact insights and recommendations in response to our clients’ needs
  • Review and summarize qualitative data from research reports, news articles, policy briefs, stakeholder interviews, and open-ended survey responses
  • Synthesize quantitative data from various sources (e.g., survey data, NCES, state data systems, demographic data, etc.), and then create charts and graphs based on the audience

The Person
You get things done.  You understand how important it is to meet your commitments without sacrificing quality and therefore understand the importance of planning. You hold yourself personally responsible for results and are patiently persistent as you follow up and follow through. You are organized and love keeping others organized as well. You especially enjoy the challenge of managing multiple work streams with high levels of complexity and dynamism. You resourcefully find ways around obstacles and you know when to ask for support. You effectively manage up, down, or across to ensure tasks get done and projects stay on track. You make sure things don’t fall through the cracks.

You understand the bigger picture and can connect the dots to your own work.  You enjoy being in a support role and understand how each task, no matter how small, is critical to our overall success. You know what it means to support a Partner as the leader of the work and recognize how important it is to truly understand the objective of the engagement so that you can contribute not just through your individual work, but by helping others maximize their role as well. You can set realistic goals and create a plan for yourself and others to achieve those goals. You also know that plans are not reality and you can adjust your approach in response to new information.

You are a strong communicator. You use clear and concise language. Others have said that your communication is concrete and actionable. You are comfortable drafting anything from a proposal to a Google Slide presentation. You understand the context in which you are communicating and can respond to emails, calls, and requests with the appropriate nuance given the audience and message. You over communicate key messages multiple times and in various ways without judgment, allowing stakeholders to fully absorb what you’re communicating. You are not afraid to ask questions to check your understanding. You express concerns in a constructive manner with an intent to resolve.

You are an excellent researcher with an analytical mind. You are strategic and thorough in your approach to gathering information. You can find reliable information on almost anything and enjoy the process of uncovering new information and increasing others’ understanding of a topic. You are also able to synthesize information and create well organized charts and graphs tailored to a wide range of audiences. You have incredibly strong analytical skills and, perhaps, find yourself using pivot tables or shortcuts in spreadsheets for no particular reason.

You can thrive on a small remote team. You are confident in who you are and how you operate and you are able to ask for what you need. You can self-manage. You feel confident that our organizational core values align with your own. You enjoy the unknown and the opportunities and challenges a young organization provides. You understand that the only constant in life is change and are able to adjust quickly to changing priorities or a new direction entirely. You rise to the challenge of dealing with the unfamiliar, effectively coping and staying calm and composed.
