Job Title: Early Literacy Teaching Assistant
FLSA Status: (Exempt/Non-exempt) Non-Exempt; Unit C, Category 1

Summary: - The Newton Public Schools seeks highly skilled educators to provide in-class and pull-out literacy support to primary students. This is a 10-hour/week position.
Qualifications: Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree or higher - degree in education or related field
- Strong verbal, written language and interpersonal communication skill to support communication among team members
- Ability to be flexible, think creatively, and work across a number of elementary schools with diverse staff and students
- Strong behavior management strategies for students
Desired Qualifications:
- Early literacy teaching experience in a school setting (for example, teaching, co-teaching, individual tutoring, small group instruction)
- Elementary Teaching Certification
- Experience in the administration and use of various literacy assessment tools, for example the BAS, sight-word, phonics, and phonological awareness assessments
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (Not Limited To): - Supporting literacy assessments within the school building
- Working with small groups and individual students on guided reading, strategy groups, phonics and word-study, phonological awareness or other literacy tasks
- Collaborating with the Literacy Specialist and classroom teachers to determine student needs, plan lessons, and support students with differentiated literacy instruction
- May be expected to provide substitute educator services
- May be expected to attend trainings related to position
- Consistent, reliable and punctual attendance is essential for supervision and instruction of the students
- Responsible for implementing "other job related duties" as needed
Work Environment & Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to assist with student behavioral needs as necessary
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building
- Regularly required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds
