POSITION SUMMARY:

The Elementary Reading Support Teacher's primary responsibility is to teach, screen, monitor, record, and report the progress of students' acquisition of reading skills. The instructor teaches students at the elementary school level using research-based methodologies for increasing readability levels to maximize students' opportunities for academic improvement, readiness, and ultimate success. This position reports to the Principal.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Uses research-based reading methodologies to increase students' competencies in the five components (i.e. phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) of reading. Designs meaningful and relevant instructional learning experiences based on Georgia's performance standards; Implements the district-specified reading intervention program(s) and instructional priorities with fidelity.

Collects, analyzes, and uses various forms of students' reading data (e.g. diagnostic, screeners, progress monitoring, summative data, etc.) to customize instructional approaches in accordance with students' specific needs.

Maintains accurate records of elementary students' performance on classroom, assessments, and homework tasks; Communicates with parents regarding students' performance. Maintains discipline in the classroom. Supervises behavior outside the classroom (i.e., halls, bus, lunch/cafeteria, restroom duty). Conducts parent/teacher conferences to review students' progress, performance, and behavior problems.

Collaborates with general education teachers and provides instructional resources and strategies to enhance literacy-based instructional approaches.

Works with support staff to provide the best instructional program for students with reading deficits.

Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences and teacher training workshops.

All other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services.

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in related grade level and content area (Language Arts or Reading) required. Master's degree in Reading preferred.

Minimum of one (1) year of teaching experience in the area of English Language Arts or Reading are required.

Level 4 or higher GaPSC Reading Specialist Certification or K-12 Reading Endorsement required.

Makes recommendations or decisions which usually affect the entire department/school.

Requires regular, frequent communication with internal school administrative personnel.

Requires regular, frequent communication with different constituencies: ELA Coordinator, external agencies, parents, community etc.

Excellent classroom management required. May be designated as a lead teacher or trainer.

Normal classroom/school setting.

Must be able to stand and walk approximately seven (7) to seven and one-half (7½) hours per day.

Light duty - On most occasions sitting at a desk or table; intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. Light lifting or carrying twenty (20) lbs. or less.
