Position Title: Orchestra Director

Reports to: Campus Principal FLSA Classification: Exempt

Terms of Employment:

• 187 days per year.

• Probationary/Term-Teacher employment agreement.

• Salary is in the Teacher Salary Schedule on the SAISD Compensation Plan as applicable with consideration for directly related experience.

Funding Source:

This position is locally funded.

Supplemental orchestra duties require additional days beyond the teacher contract in accordance with District and Fine Arts Department requirements.

• Additional annual supplement of $1,500 for Elementary Orchestra Program responsibilities.

• Additional annual supplement of $1,500 for Academy Orchestra Program responsibilities.

• Additional annual supplement of $3,500 for Middle School Orchestra Program responsibilities.

• Additional annual supplement of $6,000 for High School Orchestra Program responsibilities. Position Summary

Plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive orchestra program that provides students with activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, musical, physical, and social growth. Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities


1. Design and implement successful teaching strategies for an orchestra program; participate in SAISD Honor

Orchestra Auditions, Clinics, and Concerts.
2. Design and implement an orchestra program that participates in a variety of public concerts within the

District, School, and Community.
3. Design and implement an orchestra program, which successfully participates in UIL and other contests,

curriculum concerts, and other events in school and within the community
4. Plan and prepare students for successful participation in Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All

District, Region, Area and State Orchestra auditions
5. Plan and prepare students for successful participation in UIL Region and State Solo & Ensemble Contests.
6. Assist with planning and implementation of the school music program.
7. Actively coordinate the efforts of the booster organization.
8. Maintain accurate orchestra equipment and uniform inventory. Responsible for the maintenance and cleaning schedule of equipment and uniforms.

Supplemental Pay: Based on Available Funds

9. Maintain the music library.
10. Actively participate in professional development activities. Attend all UIL/TMEA Region meetings, clinics,

and concerts.
11. Actively participate in professional organizations which foster and support music education.
12. Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected

for this position.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in music education from an accredited college or university.

• Valid Texas career and technical education certificate with required license, endorsements, and training for subject and level assigned, or related training and work experience for certification waivers under the District of Innovation Plan (DOI)

• Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Expertise in orchestra curriculum and instructional methods, leading to the preparation of advanced orchestra literature to an exemplary level of performance.

• Knowledge of technology (MIDI applications, Smart Music, Finale, Sibelius).

• Skill in the use of technology and knowledge of appropriate software for half-time show design and UIL competition.

• Demonstrated evidence of responsibility, competence, enthusiasm, and imagination.

• Demonstrated ability to foster cooperation and establish a professional relationship with other staff members.

• Demonstrated success in promoting positive public relations within the community.

• Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining students in the program.

• Demonstrated success in motivating students to excel.

• Demonstrates ability to work and assist other orchestra directors in the district.

• Ability to manage budget and personnel.

• Knowledge of state, UIL, and TMEA policies governing orchestra activities.

• Demonstrated ability in implementing a successful orchestra program. Working Conditions Work Environment:

• Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.

• Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

• Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, balancing, pulling and pushing; reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity and prolonged data input; occasional lift/carry light, moderate 15-44 pounds.
