Job Description
Provide instructional support to students identified as deaf or hard-of-hearing (AI) at the SAISD RDSPD cluster sites to ensure a quality educational program based on federal and state standards and on sound instructional practices. Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities
1. Participate in the response to intervention, referral, and assessment processes of students with hearing loss.
2. Assist school and department staff in interpreting medical and educational records pertaining to hearing loss for eligibility and for instructional planning.
3. Assist school staff in obtaining medical reports needed to establish/continue eligibility for AI services.
4. Assist in the selection of technology, equipment, and materials appropriate for students with varying
degrees of hearing loss.
5. Maintain an inventory of AI materials and equipment used by specific students with hearing loss.
6. Work with other staff members to determine instructional goals and objectives for students as well as
specific instruction in skills needed to compensate for hearing loss.
7. Assist classroom teachers in understanding the needs of AI students and help them so they may provide
strategies that are appropriate for the types and severity of hearing loss of their students.
8. Collaborate with classroom teachers to provide educational experiences that include appropriateacademic and behavioral support, pacing and accommodations/modifications essential and appropriate to the needs of the students.
9. Facilitate access to community agencies, such as DARS, that provide services to deaf/hard-of-hearing individuals.
10. When working with children from birth to three years of age, support, teach, model, and advise the parents in the areas of parent-child communication, child development, hearing aid management, listening skills and language development.
11. Analyze performance data to provide targeted instruction based on students' individual needs
12. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's and campus curriculum
program, reflect accommodations for individualized learning, and show written evidence of preparation as required
13. Present subject matter according to the guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations and campus expectations
14. Collaborate with other staff members to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements and campus expectations
15. Work with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students as identified in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
16. Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process
17. Plan and monitor workflow of instructional assistants and volunteers (maybe change this to interpreters
and DSS)
18. Comply with the Texas Educator's Code of Ethics
19. Alternative methods of performing the position as assigned
20. Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
21. Performs other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilitiesexpected for this position.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with required endorsements for deaf/hard-of-hearing or auditory
impairment • Passed the TASQ or TASC • Experience with students with hearing loss. May be as part of university training.
• Demonstrated competency in core subject area assigned
• No Teaching Experience: Favorable recommendation from an educational program supervisor
• 1-2 Years of Teaching Experience: The summative evaluation scores must be at "proficient" or above in four of sixteen dimensions with no "improvement needed" in any dimension using TTESS or a comparable performance evaluation tool
• 3 or More Years of Teaching Experience: The summative evaluation scores must be at "proficient" or above in nine of sixteen dimensions with no "improvement needed" in any dimension using TTESS or a comparable performance evaluation tool
• Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Knowledge of public laws and district procedures regarding special education and students with disabilities
• Knowledge of the unique communication needs of students with an auditory impairment • Knowledge of various types of hearing loss, communication needs, and adaptive/assistive devices and equipment used by students with auditory impairments • Knowledge of sign language and the ability to instruct students to speak/understand sign • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction at all grade levels • Knowledge of and ability to participate in and facilitate the ARD/IEP process • Knowledge of the developmental needs of students related to hearing loss for students of varying ability
levels and ages • Ability to work cooperatively with campus teachers to assure that students with auditory impairments
can participate in classroom activities with necessary accommodations • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills • Ability to adjust and be flexible to a multitude of situations in the school environment
Working Conditions Work Environment:
• Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
• Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.
Physical Demands/Requirements:
• Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines and prolonged or irregular hours; Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing; Occasional: Lifting and carrying 10-25 pounds frequently, 25-40 pounds occasionally, more than 45 pounds infrequently with assistance; Pushing/pulling 10-35 pounds sporadically; May be required under specific circumstances to provide physical restraint of students in danger of causing harm to themselves or others; Frequent districtwide and occasional statewide travel.
