Job Description
Facilitate communication between students who are deaf/hard of hearing and their hearing classmates, classroom teachers and other personnel in the school setting. Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities
1. Use sign language communication to present and clarify information for students in all activities where communication support is needed.
2. Assist the D/HH student to function successfully in mainstream classrooms.
3. Communicate oral language to each deaf student by using sign language and explain what the student
may not understand.
4. Stay updated with academic vocabulary needed for each day of instruction in Signed Exact English and ASL.
5. Attend and interpret at ARD committee meetings as needed.
6. Attend to the academic, developmental, and behavioral progress of students, and share that information
with the teacher in the appropriate format.
7. Provide accurate feedback regarding student use of interpreter for purposes of goal setting and progress
monitoring.
8. Support the implementation of the behavior management system.
9. Provide communication support in mainstream classes, school activities during the normal school day, transition, and non-academic activities.
10. Serve as a liaison between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program, mainstream teachers, and campus staff.
11. Serve as a communication facilitator for hearing impaired staff members or parents when appropriate.
12. Participate in staff development activities that improve job-related skills.
13. Attend campus meetings that involve all campus staff or are specific for Interpreters of the Deaf/HH.
14. Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expectedfor this position.
Minimum Requirements
• High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.
• Current certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: BEI I or II under the previous certification system or Basic under the current certification system.
• Experience interpreting for children with hearing loss. This may include experience in schools, daycare, or camps.
• Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Command of sign language systems and the academic vocabulary used by students in Pre-K to 12th grade.
• Basic knowledge of hearing loss and its implications for the educational setting.
• Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents.
• Demonstrated ability to adjust and be flexible in a multitude of situations in the school environment.
• Knowledge and understanding of interpreter role and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf code of
Professional Conduct.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret all formal education settings where facilitation of communication is
needed.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate the message faithfully conveying the content and spirit of the
speaker using ASL, Exact Signed English or transliteration.
• Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
• Excellent ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, district
personnel, business partners, and community.
Working Conditions Work Environment: • Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
• Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional
exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc. Physical Demands/Requirements: • Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, balancing, pulling and pushing; reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity and prolonged data input; occasional lift/carry light, moderate 15-44 pounds.
