Job Description

To guide and oversee appropriate special education, services and support for eligible students an IEP, thus

increasing learning readiness and academic success. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with state

and federal timelines, meeting documentation, facilitating communication with students and staff, and improving

parent and teacher relationships, including, but not limited to assisting with implementation of accommodations, specially designed instruction, dyslexia, supports compliance, and coordination of academic and related services.

Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities

1. Utilize extensive knowledge of student programming in designing, planning, implementing, and evaluating

special education services, and accommodations.

2. Monitor state and federal compliance, fidelity of program implementation, and address the needs of

special education students.

3. Conduct walkthroughs and monitoring of instructional quality as Department Head.

4. Serve as the "Principal Designee" in typical ARD meetings, not including those with advocates or

attorneys.

5. Facilitates ARD meetings.

6. Guide students and families in making life impacting decisions, such as transition planning for post-high

school.

7. Maintaining students' special education, assisting with standardized testing, supporting College

Board/ACT requirements, and assisting with registration of special populations students.

8. Maintains dialogue with administration, faculty, and parents to better meet the needs of each student.

9. Serves as the Special Education Department Head.

10. Adhere to applicable laws and regulations governing confidentiality and ethical standards.

11. Performs other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilitiesexpected for this position.

Minimum Requirements

 Master's Degree from an accredited college or university.

 3+ years teaching experience

 Valid Texas Certification

 Valid Texas Principal or Mid-Management certificate

 Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee

(approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.

Preferred Requirements

 5+ years of progressive experience in teaching special education

 Valid Bilingual or ESL supplemental certification

 Bilingual (Spanish)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 Knowledge of state and federal laws regarding the education of special populations.

 Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area.

 Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee process and Individual Education Plan

(IEP) goal setting process and monitoring of implementation.

 General knowledge of curriculum and instruction and use of data to increase student achievement.

 Ability to maintain comprehensive documentation and records.

 Ability to lead, advise, implement, and monitor effective educational and behavioral programs for

students with disabilities.

 Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

 Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

 Proven ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.

 Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy.

 Proven ability to create and maintain a positive office environment.

 Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Working ConditionsWork Environment:

 Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.

 Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional

exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

 Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, balancing, pulling and pushing; reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity and prolonged data input; occasional lift/carry light, moderate 15-44 pounds.

Supervisory Responsibilities / Direct Reports

 Supervision of Instructional Assistants assigned to special education.
