Assistant School Nurse (RN)

Position Title: Assistant School Nurse

Summary:

The Assistant School Nurse, a registered professional nurse (RN), works under the direct supervision of the Head School Nurse to support the health and wellness needs of the student body. This role is crucial in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment, providing direct nursing care, and assisting with health-related administrative duties. The ideal candidate is a compassionate, organized, and skilled RN who is dedicated to promoting student health and academic success.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Student Care:

  • Provide direct nursing care to students for illnesses and injuries in accordance with established school health protocols, nursing standards, and state regulations.
  • Assess student health complaints, administer first aid, and determine the need for further medical attention.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments to students under physician orders, parent consent, and school policy.
  • Manage acute and chronic health conditions of students, including but not limited to diabetes, asthma, severe allergies, and seizures, following individualized health plans (IHPs) and emergency action plans (EAPs).
  • Perform health screenings (e.g., vision and hearing) as mandated by state and school policies.

Health Office Operations & Administration:

  • Assist the Head School Nurse with maintaining accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student health records in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Document all health office visits, treatments, and communications accurately and promptly.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked health office, including managing medical supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in developing and implementing school-wide health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators regarding student health issues while maintaining confidentiality and upholding the student's right to privacy.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Respond to medical emergencies on campus as part of the school's emergency response team.
  • Assist in the implementation of emergency protocols and plans.
  • Participate in training staff on emergency procedures, such as EpiPen administration or CPR.

Health Promotion & Education:

  • Assist with health-related presentations or school-wide initiatives, when necessary (e.g., flu clinics, wellness fairs).

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program (Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required).
  • Licensure: Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of New Hampshire.
  • Experience:

    • Preferred minimum of [e.g., one to two] years of nursing experience, preferably in a pediatric, public health, or school setting.
    • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) is a plus.

  • Certifications:

    • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross)
