Job Description

Assist teachers in supporting the delivery of special education services to students with significant hearing loss. To assist students to master class/course content by communicating with them in spoken and sign language as they learn curriculum skills and content. Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities

1. Assist the teacher to implement the individual IEPs for students in the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) Program by working with individual students or small groups on specific units of instruction.

2. Use sign language communication to present and clarify information for students in all activities where communication support is needed.

3. Assist in the preparation, use and care of instructional materials and educational media specifically designed for students with hearing loss.

4. Assist the teacher by performing such tasks as duplicating instructional materials and tests, grading student work, keeping and maintaining student records.

5. Assist the D/HH student to function successfully in mainstream classrooms.
6. Communicate oral language to each deaf student by using sign language and explain what the student

may not understand.
7. Assist students with physical needs and personal care.
8. Use universal precautions regarding health and cleanliness.
9. Attend to the academic, developmental, and behavioral progress of students, and share that information

with the teacher in the appropriate format.

10. Establish and maintain good working relationships with department staff, school personnel, students, and parents.

11. Assist in the implementation of a behavior management system, when appropriate.

12. Assist in the supervision of students on the playground, in the lunchroom and in other campus locations, as assigned.

13. Assist in maintaining an inventory of materials and equipment.

14. Serve as a liaison between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program and mainstream teachers.

15. Assist hearing impaired staff members or parents by functioning strictly as a communication facilitator, when appropriate.

16. Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.

Minimum Requirements

• Must have one of the following educational requirements:

o Associates degree or higher from an accredited college/university.

o A minimum of forty-eight (48) semester college hours from an accredited college or university.

o High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional

accrediting agency and completion of the paraeducator training course provided by Stedi.org with a

passing score of 70% or higher or Treasuring Our Paraprofessionals certificate through Region XX (course

fees are the responsibility of the applicant)

• Eligible to obtain a paraprofessional certificate issued by the State Board of Educator Certification.

• Experience working with children with hearing loss, such as work in church-related schools, day camps, private

schools, or licensed day centers or similar experience.

• Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.

Preferred Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in sign language.

• Basic knowledge of hearing loss and its implications for the educational setting.

• Demonstrated ability to utilize basic classroom management techniques for working with students.

• Excellent ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, district personnel, business partners, and community.

• Display behavior that demonstrates respect for the students and other staff members; model appropriateadult-student interactions.

Working Conditions Work Environment:

• Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.

• Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

• Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, balancing, pulling and pushing; reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity and prolonged data input; occasional lift/carry light, moderate 15-44 pounds.
