Job Description

The Assistant Band Director will assist in the planning and implementation of a comprehensive band program that will foster success and community pride. Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities

1. Design and implement a concert band program, which successfully participates in UIL and other concert band contests along with periodic concerts in school and within the community

2. Design and implement successful teaching strategies for a middle school band program which successfully participates in SAISD Honor Band Auditions, Clinics, and Concerts

3. Design and implement a band program that participates in a variety of public concerts within the District, School, and Community

4. Design and implement a Jazz band program, which successfully participates in periodic concerts, competitions, and community functions

5. Design and implement a concert band program, which successfully participates in UIL and other concert band contests along with periodic concerts in school and within the community

6. Plan and prepare students for successful participation in Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All District/Region concert band auditions

7. Communicate expectations and program goals to students, faculty, parents, community and booster club members

8. Plan, promote and maintain a professional and positive working relationship with feeder middle school administration and staff

9. Actively coordinate the efforts of the band booster organization
10. Maintain a current and accurate band equipment and uniform inventory
11. Implement planned maintenance and cleaning schedule of equipment and uniforms
12. Maintain the music library
13. Attend all UIL.TMEA Region meetings, clinics and concerts
14. Actively participate in professional development activities
15. Actively participate in professional organizations, which foster and support music education

16. Performs other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Music Education from an accredited college or university, or 4 years of equivalent experience

• Valid Secondary or All-Level Music Texas teaching certificate

• Demonstrated competency in core subject area assigned

• Prior success as head or assistant Band Director at the middle School or high school level

• Success at UIL Contests.

• No Teaching Experience: Favorable recommendation from an educational program supervisor

• 1-2 Years of Teaching Experience: The summative evaluation scores must be at "proficient" or above in four of sixteen dimensions with no "improvement needed" in any dimension using TTESS or a comparable performance evaluation tool

• 3 or More Years of Teaching Experience: The summative evaluation scores must be at "proficient" or above in nine of sixteen dimensions with no "improvement needed" in any dimension using TTESS or a comparable performance evaluation tool

• Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee

Preferred Requirements

• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of standard TEKS based middle school and high school band curriculum and instructional practices

• Knowledge of middle school or high school band literature and repertoire, including the UIL Prescribed Music List and standard method books

• Working knowledge of technology (MIDI, Music Software)

• Skill in the use of appropriate technology software for UIL competition and music notation

• Demonstrate evidence of responsibility, competence, enthusiasm, and imagination

• Demonstrate ability to foster cooperation and establish a professional relationship with other staff members

• Demonstrate success in promoting positive public relations within the community

• Demonstrate success in motivating students to excel

• Demonstrate ability to work successfully with beginning students

• Demonstrate ability to work with and assist other band directors within the cluster in implementing a successful band program

Working Conditions Work Environment:

• Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.

• Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

• Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, balancing, pulling and pushing; reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity and prolonged data input; occasional lift/carry light, moderate 15-44 pounds.
