Department: Athletics
Class Title: Assistant Coach - FootballFTE: 30 hrs/week / 15 weeks

General Statement of duties: This position is responsible for coaching student athletes in sport specific techniques and strategies, while maintaining the core philosophies of Westerly Public Schools.

Supervision Received: The Assistant Football Coach is supervised by the Head Football Coach and the school Athletic Director.

Supervision Exercised: The Coach is responsible for student supervision immediately preceding, during and after practices and/or games.

Nature and Scope of Position:
Job Functions and Responsibilities:
•Follow state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program.
•Work with the head coach and athletic director in scheduling facilities for practices and competitions.
•Model sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
•Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times.
•Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury.
•Follow established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
•Participate in special activities to include parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
•Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
Assist Head Coach in The Following:
•Monitoring academic progress and encourage student athletes to challenge themselves academically.
•Provide input and execute well planned practice schedules.
•Asses the skills of players and provide personnel opinions.
•Provide the appropriate instruction necessary to execute each days plan.
•Be a model of behavior on the practice field, locker room, bus rides and game days.
•Maintain proper records such as attendance, injuries, academics, etc.
Other Duties
•Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
•Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Head Coach and Athletic Director or other appropriate administrator.
•Ensure safety of student-athletes
•Promote fair play
•Communicate instructions and commands using clear, simple language.
•Encourage participants to gain and develop skills, knowledge and techniques; especially by demonstrating an activity by breaking the task down into a sequence.
•Resolve team issues
•Communicate with families
•Promote out of season competition on other WHS Athletic teams
Required qualifications for appointment:
Knowledge, skills and capabilities:
•Strong leadership ability.
•Keen understanding of teamwork, team building and group management
•Strong communication and listening skills
•Ability to be both assertive and professional
•Able to successfully complete a national background check
•Maintain good standing within the RI Football Coaches Association
•Actively stay involved in all Thanksgiving game functions, including pre-game and post-game
•Commit to all off season functions as assigned by Head Coach
Education: Bachelor's degree preferred.
Obtain First Aid and CPR Certifications
Pass "NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching" within 30 days of hire
Annually complete the NFHS Concussion management course
Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Follow all RIIL/RIDE policies for maintaining certification

Job Requirements
  • Must have National Background Check results at time of hire
  • All Coaching Certifications needed at time of hire.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Bachelor degree preferred
  • Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required
