Duties and Responsibilities

The Dean of Student Supports ensures that the academic and behavioral needs of students requiring additional support and services are met, including students with IEP's and 504 plans. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
•Oversee our special education program
•Manage a caseload of special education students and the implementation of their IEP/504 plans.
•Ensure appropriate delivery of both special education instruction and related services, in compliance with all local and Federal laws as stipulated in students IEPs/504 plans
•Oversee and coordinate all components of the special education process including the process for referrals, evaluations, annual IEP/504 review, and re-evaluations; facilitate IEP meetings using strengths based and family centered approach; communicate effectively with families during all components of this process in alignment with parental rights granted by IDEA
•In collaboration with the Head of School and Dean of Curriculum and Instruction, collect and analyze data to inform student progress and use this data to inform programmatic decisions
•Identify and develop appropriate curriculum and school based assessments to support the academic growth of students with IEPs/504 plans
•Facilitate workshops / meetings for parents, as well as identify resources for parents of students with special needs
•Collaborate with other staff members and actively participate in all professional development and learning activities
•Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

•Education: Master's Degree in Special Education or Education Leadership
•Preferred skills and work experience:
oHave a minimum of 2 years of successful classroom teaching experience in an urban school setting as a special education teacher
oExcellent verbal and written skills with strong organization
oExperience or familiarity analyzing data and using data to inform decisions and/or instruction
oStrong belief that all students can succeed
oDemonstrates persistence in overcoming and removing obstacles to achieve goals set and inspire others to do the same
oDemonstrate an advanced understanding of instructional strategies for students with autism, developmental delay, specific learning disabilities, and behavior disorders
oCritical thinker, problem-solver and team player
oSpanish fluency highly desirable

We provide ongoing PD that will consist of coaching and support: it will involve frequent, short observations that include coaching in real time and immediate feedback with manageable action steps. Because we will be growing each year, there will are opportunities for professional growth. Teachers will be compensated for additional duties such as teaching at our Saturday Math or our Summer Academy.

Teachers will be provided with significant professional development opportunities, including:

30 full professional development days, with 20 days of summer training;
10 full professional development days through the year including five (5) focused on data analysis;
Two hours of weekly professional development on early dismissal Fridays;
Weekly classroom observations followed by feedback sessions and practice-based coaching with instructional leadership;
A minimum of 110 minutes of planning time daily;
Common planning time over the summer and for two periods daily throughout the school year, allowing them to plan together, design common assessments, and ensure horizontal and vertical alignment;
And ongoing coaching in classrooms.
