Job Description

The COMPASS School is a therapeutic day-school that serves students aged 6-21 with varying disabilities including emotional impairment, behavior disorders, and other disabilities that require special education in an individualized environment. Students are referred from school districts in eastern Massachusetts for whom school has been a struggle. Students attend COMPASS on the basis of their individual needs either for a short-term period of evaluation or a long-term placement at COMPASS. The COMPASS School utilizes a therapeutic approach to build resiliency among its students by providing them with distinct programs based on age, cognitive levels, emotional needs, and academic requirements. The COMPASS School includes grades 1-12 as well as a vocational and a transitions program.

Director of Educational Services

The Director of Educational Services reports to the Executive Director and is a part of COMPASS' Leadership Team. The Director of Educational Services collaborates with the Director of Clinical Services to oversee the daily operations of the school and its programs. The Director of Educational Services is responsible for the academic programming at all grade levels, with the priority of meeting our students' special education needs. The Director of Educational Services collaborates with the Director of Clinical Services to create a positive, structured, consistent, and caring school culture which is equitable and inclusive of all.

Special Education Leadership

Support all staff in implementing goals and objectives in students' IEPs and ensure best practices for skill development in all areas (academic, behavioral, clinical)
Support all staff and students in the milieu
Support the Education Coordinator in ensuring that IEPs are developmentally appropriate, curriculum/standards based and relevant to individual students
Participate in meetings as needed with school staff and staff from the public school districts
Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Services to facilitate workshops/meetings for parents/guardians, as well as identify resources for parents/guardians of students with special needs

Instructional Leadership

Oversee the awareness and response to the educational needs of all students
Support the Lead Teachers and teaching staff in working to embrace a culture of teaching and learning with high expectations
Provide professional learning and planning time to teaching staff that results in improved standards-based, well structured, cognitively demanding plans and instruction that meet the needs of all students
Conduct regular observations of instruction and planning and provide feedback to the teaching staff
Use frequent observation, data and evaluation guidelines to assign well-supported ratings for performance
Facilitate the use of various assessments. Use and support data-based decision making in planning and delivering instruction and interventions.
Oversee the administration of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS)

Management and Operations

Supervise the Education Coordinator, Lead Teachers and Teaching Staff
Lead recruitment and hiring processes of all teaching and administrative staff
Oversee the development of classroom schedules and individual teaching schedules
Complete paperwork and reports for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) as needed
Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Services to complete the DESE Program Review and Mid Cycle Review (audits)
Establish and maintain systems and routines that ensure a safe, welcoming learning environment for all students
Oversee the planning and development of trainings and professional development for teaching staff, and all staff


Massachusetts Special Education Administrator License AND Massachusetts Special Education Teacher License


Massachusetts Special Education Teacher License AND Master's Degree in Special Education AND 1 year administrative experience WITH eligibility to obtain Massachusetts Special Education Administrator License or Massachusetts Principal License

3-5 years special education teaching experience, specifically with students with emotional and behavioral disabilities
3-5 years administrative experience

Demonstrates strong knowledge of federal, state and local mandates as related to students with disabilities
Demonstrates ability to support, mentor, and model best practices and instructional strategies specifically designed for students with disabilities
Demonstrates strong advocacy skills for students with disabilities
Demonstrates ability and experience in supervising supervisors and direct care staff
Demonstrates ability and experience in program administration and development
Displays initiative, resourcefulness, and effective problem solving skills
Reflects and communicates in a timely and clear manner; writes and speaks effectively
Organizes multiple tasks, delegates when appropriate, and follows through

Selection Procedure:
