Job Description

Teaching Trust seeks a full-time Managing Director of Finance to provide Teaching Trust with consistent financial management that allows Teaching Trust staff and Board of Directors to be strong stewards of our financial resources.

What You’ll Take On
Reporting to our Chief Operating Officer, our Managing Director of Finance is charged with ensuring our Teaching Trust team and Board of Directors have the financial information needed to make decisions to drive our work and impact and manage the organization.  

The Managing Director of Finance is the primary owner of our key financial processes including (but not limited to):

• Managing our annual functional team and org-wide budget process

• Providing regular financial reports and analyses to inform organizational decision making

• Monitoring our organizational cash flow• Ensuring we have an annual audit

• Ensuring appropriate systems, procedures, and controls are maintained to enable appropriate internal checks and balances

• Managing our financial vendor and bank relationships

• Developing cost models and grant budgets

• Providing critical support for key fundraising efforts and grant reporting

• Supporting key talent decisions  that affect the staff experience

Additionally, in FY19 (ending June 30, 2019) you will:

• Develop and implement an approach to FY20 budgeting that involves budget managers and produces draft org wide  and functional team budget by April 1, is vetted by the Finance Committee, and approved by the Board of Directors by June 1.

• Improve financial systems and processes so that Teaching Trust is better equipped to run smoothly, have the financial information teams need to be better stewards of resources, and simplifies their financial work to free up more time for them to do their primary roles. Key processes to focus on in the first 6 months include (but are not limited to):

• Accounts receivable - develop and implement approach that allows Teaching Trust to consistently collect and monitor revenues and fees

• Accounts payable - create and implement approach to managing payment of accounts payable to minimizes risk, is consistently implemented across the organization, and is elegantly simple---

• Expense reporting management - identify and implement new tool for expense reporting that both ensures we have the data and information needed for our financial reporting and is not overly onerous for team members to use• .

• With COO, develop and implement approach to regularly monitor cash flow on a rolling basis and project Teaching Trust’s costs and project revenue needs on 12-18 month horizon, which will allow organizational leadership make better decisions about revenues and costs (e.g., when to accelerate donations, when to cut costs or delay expenses, decide max staffing levels for the org).

Ideal candidates will have:

• Deep understanding of basic accounting principles with knowledge of nonprofit accounting

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field

• At least five years of professional experience with three years in a finance-related position; experience with small or startup organizations a plus (though not required)

• Self-starter who has exceptional critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills

• Excellent project management and systems-building skills

• Strong attention to detail with a focus on ensuring accuracy and minimizing errors

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment, demonstrating resilience and a growth mindset

• Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills with ability to influence, collaborate, and build trusting relationships to drive results

• High level of comfort taking and implementing frequent feedback to improve the work

• Ability to work well with people with a very wide diversity of demographic and cultural characteristics; must be capable of achieving results while maintaining an inclusive, collaborative leadership style

• Passion to work at an organization focused on ameliorating educational inequity

• Strong desire and ability to innovate and adopt new approaches to achieve resultsExceptionally strong project management and time management skills

• Authorization to work in the United States required
