SUBSTITUTE GENERAL INFORMATION

Thank you for substitute teaching at DT26J. Your efforts and willingness to help our school district provides a valuable service to our students and full time staff in grades PK-12. The District Secretary, manages our substitute tracking and placement needs by personal phone or text. It is important to have accurate and up to date information for substitute assignments as this is how you will be contacted.

All substitute hires are approved by the Deer Trail 26J School District Board of Education. Substitutes serve on an on-call basis and are not guaranteed a minimum number of employment days per school year. Substitutes have the ability to set preferences on locations, days, and subjects. Substitutes also have the option to decline positions due to personal schedules.

We have two types of substitutes in our district, certified and classified . All new incoming substitutes are requested to meet with administration in person or at minimum by phone. This information is meant to assist you and provide you with a substitute orientation. We would like all substitutes to work at least one day per month to stay active on the substitute list.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBSTITUTE TEACHING-CERTIFIED

REQUIREMENTS FOR LONG-TERM SUBSITUTE TEACHING

A long-term substitute position is "sub" being in the same position for more than 15 consecutive work days. It is preferred that substitutes who teach in a long-term substitute position, be highly-qualified, as defined by CDE, in the subject area being taught and/or display strong content knowledge of the subject matter. When a long-term position becomes available, substitutes will be notified of the opportunity and school administration will select the substitute for the job.

TEACHING TIME

Substitute teaching time is defined as the actual hours during the regular school day when the substitute teacher is assigned and providing service within the building. The work schedule includes teaching hours as well as time spent performing other duties assigned by the school administrator. Teaching time shall be exclusive of lunch.

The beginning and ending times for each job can vary depending on the position and location of the job. Substitutes are expected to report for work and remain for the entire job as defined by the beginning and ending times. If you cannot work the entire job, do not accept the assignment. Failure to fulfill the complete work shift, as scheduled, can result in removal from the list of active substitutes.

Substitute teachers are not entitled to a planning period with the exceptions of a long-term substitute. Substitutes are not permitted to leave the building during the shift, except for lunch. If not enough substitutes teachers are available to cover all absences, substitute teachers may be asked to teach in multiple classrooms. In addition to regular teaching duties, substitute teachers are required to perform other duties of absent teachers including hall duty, lunch supervision, playground duty, bus duty, etc.

All substitutes should report to the office upon arriving for the day to sign-in by 7:30 AM. Please complete all paperwork (Substitute Teacher's Report). Incomplete information could result in processing and payment delays. At the end of the day, please return any security badges/keys/fabs or other school property to the office staff.

Compensation

Deer Trail substitute teachers - must hold a Substitute License from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). If you are a new substitute, please fill out the on-line application. One-Year Substitutes are paid at a daily rate of $110 per day. Three year or professional licensed substitutes pay is $125 per day. Five year professional substitutes pay is $135 per day. All substitutes will receive free school breakfast and lunch. Long term substitute rate of pay after fifteen consecutive (15) days is $145 per day. Effective January 2021, Deer Trail 26J will reimburse you the cost of your license renewal, if you substitute a minimum of five (5) days over the course of the year in our PK-12 school.
