Job Description

What will you do all day?

At NMSI, our people mean everything to us; they are the lifeblood of the organization. NMSI is looking for a Director of Development, Growth to drive forward development plans that support the multi-region growth plans of NMSI’s programs. You will support the Vice President, Growth in implementing short- and long- range strategies to fund NMSI’s strategic plans and priorities.

What are the details?

The Director of Development reports to the Vice President, Growth and will be responsible for managing a Senior Manager of Development and Grants, a Manager of Development and Individual Giving, and a Manager of Development. As Director, you will be responsible for identifying funding opportunities— private philanthropy, corporate partners, government agencies/grants, and high net worth individual givers—to support NMSI’s core programs; College Readiness Program, Laying the Foundation, Teacher Pathways (UTeach) and strategic initiatives tied to our five-year strategic plan (NMSI Next). You will develop, champion and implement a regional development plan for Georgia and New York (Metro) area, as well as opportunistic geographic locations east of the Mississippi River.  You will lead a sophisticated fundraising operation while managing and coaching a diverse team to set the short- and long-term fundraising vision and direction for the region. As part of this, you will:

  • Track and assess team-wide progress to goals and maintain strong operational systems for efficient and effective team execution
  • Liaise and align funding opportunities in conjunction with NMSI colleagues leading school district cultivation efforts
  • Manage and increase a donor pipeline to increase awareness and understanding NMSI programs, as well as solicit renewed and upgraded gifts from existing donors
  • Quickly build strong, dynamic partnerships with key stakeholders within the STEM community and beyond

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Grow a major gifts program via identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors
  • Oversee federal and state grant seeking, including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements
  • Meet prospective donors and supporters of NMSI on a continual basis to establish a robust fundraising pipeline
  • Develop compelling and effective pitches, proposals, fundraising campaigns and tactical plans to reach various donor segments, including private philanthropy, corporate partners, government agencies/grants, and high net worth individual givers
  • Establish and maintain a major gift prospect list for the region
  • Support programmatic funding for UTeach, Fine Arts, and Strategic Initiatives
  • Strategize and facilitate fundraising special events
  • Supervise and collaborate with other Growth fundraising and school cultivation staff (and outside consultants)
  • Represent Growth as a fundraising leader within NMSI on cross-functional teams
  • Coordinate the creation of publications and materials that support fundraising activities
  • Supervise a regional gift recognition program
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Education & Experience. You have a bachelor’s degree with 8 or more years of fundraising experience and prior record of leading a team to raise $10MM+ annually (required). Prior knowledge of Raiser’s Edge strongly preferred.
  • Industry Expert. You possess strong fundraising knowledge.
  • Analytical and Strategic Thinker. You have an analytical approach with a strong ability to think creatively. You think analytically, prioritize tasks and develop processes that monitor progress and performance. You rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
