POSITION: School Psychologist, Alpha Public Schools

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education

Alpha is seeking an entrepreneurial school psychologist who will thrive in a dynamic startup environment. Alpha’s school psychologist will have high expectations for all students and a willingness to work hard, doing whatever is necessary to ensure the success of every student. They possess a growth mindset, strong personal character, and a consistent track record of high performance that is results-oriented. They are hard working, punctual, urgent, energetic, and embrace a spirit of self-reflection with a constant desire to improve. Finally, Alpha’s school psychologist will hold a deep belief that all students can succeed in college, and that it is the responsibility of staff to ensure that success.

  • EXPERIENCED: Alpha School Psychologists have 1-5 years of conducting psycho-educational evaluations/psychometric tests that serve as the basis for special education referrals. They posses a valid California Pupil Personnel Services credential (PPS credential with a counseling authorization is highly preferred).
  • DRIVEN: Alpha School Psychologists have a relentless drive to advance the minds and lives of students with disabilities in and out of the classrooms. They have a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • ENTREPRENEURIAL: Alpha School Psychologists are risk takers who innovate at multiple school sites to best suit the needs of students. They learn from data and collaboration, and act on constructive criticism to improve their craft.
  • COLLABORATIVE: Alpha School Psychologists engage in regular problem solving and designing supports for students with the special education team. They demonstrate strong communication and relationship building with students, families, and colleagues.
  • FLEXIBLE: Alpha School Psychologists adapt to meet the needs of students and a startup work environment, and maintain a calm and inviting presence.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred.

School Psychologist Responsibilities

  • Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Special Education, the School Psychologist will provide evaluative services to students who are referred to special education and to students who require triennial reevaluations
  • Professionally write and present legally defensible psycho-educational reports at IEP meetings, and engage excellent judgment skills to make recommendations on special education eligibility
  • Collaborate with families, special education teachers, and general education teachers to ensure psycho-educational reports present a holistic picture of student needs
  • Serve as the gate-keeper of special education referrals, and make decisions on which intervention path is best for individual students
  • Engage with families around the special education pre-referral and referral process, as well as effectively articulate decisions that are made based on evaluations
  • Assist the IEP team with developing appropriate and rigorous supports for students with special needs
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with special education laws, as well as school policies and procedures
  • Stay organized in a dynamic and ever-changing environment, with attention to timing and detail, especially in regards to legal timelines for assessments
  • If authorized by credential, provide small group and individual counseling sessions for general education and special education students
  • Serve as an integral part of a crisis response team and provide therapeutic intervention as needed
  • Provide timely feedback to and facilitate collaboration and communication between students, parents, special education teachers, and general education teachers


  • Valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential with authorization in School Psychology (additional authorization in school counseling highly preferred)
  • 1-5 years working as a school psychologist (or school psychologist intern/psychological assistant), preferably in urban schools
  • Master’s Degree (MA/MS) in School Psychology or Educational Psychology
