The School Nurse will provide nursing case management and delegating RN services to individuals with autism and related disabilities in our school program.
The School Nurse practices school nursing in accordance with the State of Maryland Nurse Practice Act and professional standards of practice. The School Nurse will delegate nursing tasks based upon the Delegation of Nursing Function criteria. The School Nurse provides leadership for school staff regarding health issues and ensures the delivery of safe school health services to students and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provides nursing case management and delegating RN services to a caseload of individual's with autism and related disabilities that include:
assessing individuals' health needs
developing care plans
Supervising direct support professionals in implementing delegated nursing tasks and medication administration in compliance with COMAR 10.27.11.
Ensures the delivery of safe school health services to students and staff.
Serves as liaison with physicians, other healthcare professionals, and family members.
Serves as consultant and resource person with students, school staff and related services personnel.
Maintains appropriate nursing documentation and nursing assessments.
Participates as an integral member of each individual's support team.
Administers medications and treatments to students as ordered by the physician.
Prepare monthly medications and MARs, to include contacting parents for re-supplies.
Maintenance of current orders (contacting parents and physicians).
Prepare monthly paperwork, i.e. seizure records, bowel records, menstrual records, etc.
Supply first aid as needed.
Maintenance of Health Suite Log, supplies, medications and children's charts.
Attend health coordination meetings with the health team as needed
Provide staff training by developing, implementing and evaluating professional staff development activities and training programs for school staff.
Participates in health promotion and accident prevention activities
Collaborates with school administrators regarding school health services issues.
Apprises school staff of health and safety issues.
Maintains confidential information in compliance with nursing practice, state and federal regulations, and school policy.
Monitors and reports environmental health concerns.
Participates in the school referral process for students as appropriate.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
May perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)
Must have a valid and active Maryland RN license
Must have an active CPR/AED certification for healthcare professionals.
Three (3) years' RN experience. Developmental disabilities and/or school nurse experience preferredDelegating Nurse experience preferred or must be willing to complete the MBON mandated Case Manager/Delegating Nurse Program-School Health and DDA RN Case Manager/Delegating Nurse/MTTP Trainer Course within 3 months of hire
Familiarity with teaching, recognizing physiological and psychological problems, and maintaining/analyzing and interpreting health records and medical reports.
Possess some knowledge of special education law, amendments, COMAR regulations, preferreIn addition, must possess the following:
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Proficient computer skills and familiarity with MS Office Suite
Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at once and ensure proper follow through as needed
A high level of commitment to take initiative and maintain a positive attitude
Ability to work effectively with family members/guardians, team members
A keen interest in improving the quality of life for the individuals served by Linwood Center, Inc.
